The woman behind the viral “Girl Explaining” meme has spoken, detailing what was really going on when the meme-worthy image was taken.
Denise Sánchez, 21, was caught photographing someone else’s photos at a beach party in Argentina in 2018 with her then-boyfriend. In the picture, she has an arm around her shoulder and appears to be insistently explaining something in her ear.

“I remember he uploaded it to Twitter. She said: ‘What a disappointment. They messed up the photo because those two kids were in the back with that face,” Sanchez told the Daily Mail. “She was laughing because we were in the back of the photo and she came out pretty, but she couldn’t post it because we were in it.”
The pair unknowingly bombed a woman’s photo that was posted on Twitter, where it briefly took off in 2019 and again in 2022.

Although the photo was taken a few years ago, it exploded on social media last month.
The meme was first introduced online after a nutrition account posted it on Twitter in 2019, joking that Sanchez was ranting about the ineffectiveness of detoxes and crash diets, according to the Know Your Meme database. It then took off among Spanish-speaking social media users, with Sánchez saying it was “hilarious” to see the photo as an online meme.

Subsequent memes ranged from common or unusual opinions on sports teams or food flavors to astrology or niche moments from television or moments from pop culture.

The photo resurfaced in August this year, with celebrities, big brands and even politicians embracing the meme, with Sánchez admitting it’s “surreal” to see a photo of her and her ex all over social media, and for celebrities to post it on line.
“The truth is that I take everything very calmly and very gracefully,” she told the Daily Mail. “I don’t mind being exposed because I’m quite extroverted. So I’m not ashamed. The context in which they put it made me laugh a lot.”
