Sports Direct Launches Star-Studded ‘Give Me Football’ Holiday Campaign

direct sports The 2022 ‘Give Me Football’ Christmas campaign is live and features football legends, following the success of last year’s ‘Go All Out’ message.

Subverting the norm of the traditionally festive Christmas season, the sportswear giant direct sports has opted for a football-focused theme this year. Featuring some of the biggest names in sports including Eric Cantona, Emma Hayes and Declan Rice, this marketing ploy is designed to appeal to both football fans and holiday givers.

Beckie Stanion, Director of Marketing for Sports Direct, commented: “As we enter an extremely exciting period, preparing for both the World Cup and Christmas, we wanted to celebrate notable holiday traditions with a comical football twist. We wanted to create something that would surprise and delight our consumers. The ads continue to celebrate the purpose of the Sports Direct brand; defending the legend in all, through the powers of sport”.

The series of miniatures, developed by CUP90, comes to life in a trio of 20-second spots, parodying classic holiday themes in unexpected and comical ways. Lawrence Tallis, creative director of COPA90, added: “We’ve assembled a star-studded cast to celebrate the first Christmas World Cup, subverting some of the tropes of festive commercials by hijacking them with football.”

The three clips include:

• Eau de Footie: Mason Mount and Eric Cantona get up close and personal with a new fragrance sure to hit the stockings
• Family Dinner – Turkey is off the menu at this not-so-typical Christmas dinner with Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Emma Hayes, Gabriel Jesus and Clive Tyldesley
• Direct – Sports Direct’s take on a smart home hub voiced by Eric Cantona and also starring West Ham duo Declan Rice and Jarred Bowen.

Beginning November 4, the campaign will run across TV, OOH, social media and in-store screenings with premium TV spots during this season’s highly anticipated I’m a Celebrity and Gogglebox launches.
