If you noticed that Mabel Mora has a little more color in her cheeks this season of Only Murders in the Building, it’s not just thanks to her new hit podcast (and, uh, turbulent romance). As Hulu and Rare Beauty have now revealed, Mabel is sporting new makeup, courtesy of her actress’s trendy beauty brand.
On July 25, Rare Beauty Global Stylist Cynthia Di Meo broke down exactly what products have graced Selena Gomez’s face when the pop icon donned Mabel’s high-heeled crocodile boots in Season 2. The Routine is made up of a custom collection packaged specifically for Only Murders in the Building, which is now available to purchase at a discounted price on the Rare Beauty site.
“One of the things that I really like about Mabel Mora’s makeup…is that it’s very real makeup,” Di Meo told viewers during an Instagram Live on July 25. “Looks like it’s something she created. On her account; it is very achievable.” He then applied Mora’s signature look step by step, as seen on the Only Murders in the Building season 2 poster. During the video, Di Meo gave tips on how to apply the products, many of them directly from Gomez’s lips. “Selena loves classic cat eyes,” she said. “But she says she can’t apply it on herself, so she wanted to create something that would make it easier to apply,” and so she spawned Perfect Strokes liquid liner, which Mabel uses primarily on the outer corners of her eyes. The stylist then finished the look with lip balm and blush, in “Selena’s favorite shade,” Nearly Neutral.
In a separate interview with ELLE.com, Dana Covarrubias, the costume designer for Only Murders in the Building, revealed that Mabel’s colorful look this season is part of a larger mission. Her clothes, her makeup, the way she walks, everything is designed to reflect a young woman slowly gaining confidence after a traumatic experience. “We’re keeping some of the same color palettes and some of the same silhouettes, but making them a little bit more mature, a little bit more artistic, a little bit bolder,” she said. “We wanted to see who Mabel is outside of The Arconia.”
Only Murders In The Building makeup artist Jackie Risotto backed up this perspective in a press release sent out by Rare Beauty: “Mabel’s makeup for season two has evolved along with her character,” she said. “She is strong, confident and beautiful, and I chose to portray this by using a more expansive color palette in her shadows, blushes and her lip colours.
