Relaunch of the Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine Consultation Clinic

With expanded hours and telemedicine visits, the Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine Consultation Clinic serves patients affected by cancer throughout the UNC Health System.

Denise Spector, MPH, PhD

UNC’s Comprehensive Cancer Support Program launched the Integrative Medicine Clinic in 2010. In November 2022, the clinic’s hours of operation were expanded with the hiring and full-time support of Denise Spector, MPH, PhD.

Visits can now be conducted in person or via telemedicine for adult patients with a current or prior history of cancer at any UNC Health hospital in North Carolina. Denise is an Oncology Nurse Practitioner and Integrative Medicine Physician with over 30 years of experience in cancer care. She completed the Integrative Oncology Fellowship Program through the University of Michigan in 2022 and is a member of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, where she completed clinical training in integrative medicine in 2018.

The Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine Clinic provides a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental health. One visit can lead patients to new insights into managing their health through evidence-based complementary health approaches. Complementary health strategies can help reduce cancer symptoms and treatment-related side effects, as well as improve overall health and well-being during and after cancer treatments.

The clinic primarily serves adults interested in mind-body practices, nutrition, dietary supplements, and lifestyle strategies that complement conventional cancer care. However, a consultation with Denise can be beneficial to any adult affected by cancer.

Any member of the clinical team can use an Integrative Medicine Outpatient Referral to refer patients to the integrative oncology clinic at Epic. The specialty of the department is psychiatry, and the department is the UNC Comprehensive Cancer Support Center.
