Nomadic fashion show mixes old and new in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan

On the shore of one of the world’s deepest lakes, high in Kyrgyzstan’s Tian Shan mountains, models strutted and strutted in outfits that mixed old and new at the World Nomads Fashion Festival.

The event, now in its third year, drew designers and fashion industry figures from some 20 countries to the sparkling Issyk-Kul Lake to admire outfits inspired by Kyrgyzstan’s ancient nomadic culture.

The stiletto heels worn by some models would not be suitable for a proper nomad, but some of their elaborate headdresses that seemed to mimic cattle horns were versions of traditional nomadic dress.

Voluminous and voluminous skirts that appear in many of the outfits, either with elaborate designs or in bright color blocks.

Along with haute couture, the show offered visitors the chance to see a variety of yurts, the wood-framed felt or skin tents characteristic of nomads, and brightly colored rugs.

There were participants from distant countries such as Indonesia, Morocco and France.

During a three-day program, some 40 designers displayed their work.

“The World Nomad Fashion Festival is the first and only project in Central Asia and some European countries that glorifies the civilization of nomads,” said event founder Nazira Begim.

“It was created in 2019. This idea belongs to me. The project is one of my old dreams.

“When I first organized it, without knowing anyone personally, I invited designers from 17 countries and held it on the shore of Issyk-Kul lake as well.”
