Nobilio wins the Women’s English Open in playoff fashion

HAZELSLADE, England – Rising redshirt sophomore Alessia Nobilio won the English Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship in playoff form at Beau Desert Golf Club on Sunday. Representing her native Italy, Nobilio birdied the third extra hole to defeat Denmark’s Christina Thouber.

Nobilio, who shot 74-68-74-71 for the tournament, birdied the 71st and 72nd holes to tie Thouber at +7 par for extra holes.

To get to that point, Nobilio was tasked with completing an up-and-down on the par-5 18th hole after hitting a greenside bunker on his approach shot.

“I was very nervous on the 18th. I know I had that opportunity (to force a playoff),” Nobilio said. “I got to the green and missed, but I’m good at bunker shots, so I thought I could make a birdie.”

She did exactly that, dropping a putt eight feet.

Nobilio sealed the win with a 20-foot birdie putt from the bottom and across the slope on the third extra playoff hole on the first par 4. Nobilio claimed the silver medal in front of his father, Alfonso Nobilio, who hadn’t seen it. compete in two years.

“I wish I could spend more time with him on the golf course,” Nobilio said. I grew up with him in the field and it’s a big thank you to him. I would also like to dedicate this victory to my grandfather, Dante, who has not been well recently and also to my mother Chiara, who I know was cheering me on from Italy!”

This marks Nobilio’s first offseason win before his sophomore year.
