NIHD Healthy Lifestyle Talks Back to School

Pediatric nurse practitioner, registered dietitians offer advice to parents
to develop healthy back-to-school routines

Healthy habits set kids up for success in and out of the classroom, but where should parents start after a busy summer? Join Tamara Loy, MSN C-PNP of the Northern Inyo Healthcare District; Kalina Gardiner, RDN; and Denice Hynd, RD MPH, on Thursday, August 25 at 5:30 pm as they help families address important issues that can create healthy lifestyles for life.

Pediatric nurse practitioner and parent Tamara Loy will discuss the importance of getting your child a good night’s sleep. We all know that when children follow consistent sleep patterns, they are more likely to be attentive and productive with school activities. For parents who struggle with their children every night at bedtime, Tamara will offer tips for developing a routine that helps create a calm and relaxing environment before bed. She will also talk about key wellness exams during childhood and adolescence. These annual exams and screenings help pediatricians and primary care providers track growth and development, while giving parents the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have.

Registered dietitian nutritionist Kalina Gardiner, a longtime advocate for sustainable lifestyle habits, will offer healthy snack ideas and school lunches that steer clear of pre-packaged empty calorie options. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity affects about 19 percent of youth in the US, some 14.4 million children and adolescents. Most children simply do not meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Packing healthy lunches beside their children, parents can lead by example and show them how to properly fuel their bodies at a young age, giving future generations the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle and lower the risk of chronic disease.

Registered dietitian Denice Hynd, a mother of two, will round out the evening’s presentation by adding her insights to an open question and answer period for parents in attendance. Denice will guide parents on the hunt for hidden sugars and fats in their children’s foods, offer advice on dealing with picky eaters, and talk about how a healthy diet is associated with better cognitive function, stabilized energy, better ability to attention and better mood and mental health. .

This educational presentation is part of the NIHD Healthy Lifestyle Talk Series. The talks are open to the public and free. Once again, the talk will be presented in three formats:
