Since Demna’s appointment in 2015, Balenciaga presented its second Fall/Winter 2022-2023 haute couture collection in the mythical, pristine white salons on Avenue Georges V on Wednesday, July 6. As a true ode to Balenciaga’s heritage, the Georgian designer revived the haute couture tradition beloved by the Parisian fashion house’s founder for the first time in 2021, with a mythical show in monastic silence. For this new haute couture collection, Balenciaga recreated the event by bringing together a five-star cast: reality TV star and businesswoman Kim Kardashian, singer Dua Lipa and actress Nicole Kidman stepped into the shoes of the model, alongside Bella Hadid and Naomi Campbell. As a meeting place between craftsmanship and innovation, haute couture obeys technical rather than aesthetic rules. However, by blending his personal aesthetic with references to streetwear, with pieces directly inspired by the house’s archives, Demna is drawing the contours of a new kind of luxury. When Balenciaga Couture’s first Parisian store opened on historic 10 Avenue George V, fifty-three years after the house’s founding, Balenciaga’s haute couture fused with Demna’s subversive edge more than ever.
Fitted cuts or maxi volumes, sober color palette or denim, rubber or aluminum effect materials, make up the basic elements of a collection with dramatic aesthetics. Heavy and imposing dresses, and black dresses with delicate feathers, embody the spirit of this collection. The fifty-nine divine silhouettes, most of them with their faces covered, crystallize the genius and know-how of the house with their characteristic sharp cuts. Last March, Demna told fashion reporter Loïc Prigent that she wanted to move towards minimalism and make one-piece suits. trompe l’oeil styles that could be worn in one go, like his famous pantashoes. The show opened with a succession of full rubber suits, declining in a variety of dresses with fitted skirts and pants with tops. Later, Demna highlighted evening wear with embroidery embedded in thick tweed, while blue and black jean jackets were teamed with sheath dresses of vertical rubber straps. Elsewhere, Kim Kardashian walked the runway in a high-waisted black dress, reminiscent of her cult look at the 2021 MET Gala, while Dua Lipa wore a short lemon yellow dress with long black gloves. Nicole Kidman showed up in an elegant draped dress with a foil screen, before Naomi Campbell appeared in an excessively full black evening gown with a neck that reached above her face.
