The Western Michigan University Merchandising Opportunity and Design Association (MODA) held a fashion show in the West Suite of the Bernhard Center on December 2. This show served to raise funds and “warm up” the MODA spring show.

MODA is a Registered Student Organization (RSO) that aims to connect fashion students and minors to develop personal and professional skills and network with companies in the fashion industry.

The RSO gives students and fashion enthusiasts a place to express themselves through what they wear.

“I think MODA is important because we’re in Kalamazoo, and it’s not a big fashion capital, which I think is important for designers, retailers or anyone who likes fashion to have a safe place to express themselves” , Secretary and Fashion Said the important Merchandising Olivia Bolognia.

FASHION is not exclusive to fashion careers. Renee Cilluffo is a sophomore and industrial engineering student who models for MODA. She participates in all the shows that MODA organizes.

“I was always in fashion. I would pretend to be the little showcase model,” Cilluffo said. “You can be into fashion and all these different creative pursuits and also be an engineering student.”

All students interested in fashion and looking for a way to express themselves are welcome to join MODA and they will find a place where they belong.

“You don’t need to be a fashion student. You can just like fashion, and I promise you’re going to make friends here because we all come together over the fact that we love fashion,” Bolognia said.

Bolognia says MODA has helped her narrow down her career options and pinpoint a more specific career path she’d like to pursue. Bolognia’s professional interests have ranged from teaching interior design to the fashion industry.

MODA has shown you how many options there are when choosing a career in the fashion industry. While she hasn’t chosen a specific path that she would like to pursue, she discovered through FASHION that she is interested in any creative path related to fashion.

This spring, MODA will hold a spring fashion show that will showcase more designs and merchandising. MODA’s spring shows are usually larger than the fall fundraising shows and are held off campus.
