Ashley Tisdale shares her beauty routine and personal care rituals

In the ultimate search for inner beauty and outer glow, Marie Claire asks our favorite pioneers to share insights on finding balance in their busy lives. Read it all here, in Beauty Inside and Out.

Sharpay Evans by day, “Grandma” by night. At least that was the story according to Ashley Tisdale. “My friends called me Grandma when I was twenty, because she was someone who worked a lot and obviously had a lot going on at that point in my life. So to be honest, I would never really get out. She would hang out and watch TV; that was my kind of self-care back then,” the actress tells Marie Claire. While “grandmas are great” and 24-hour binging is a stellar use of time in our book, it’s only natural for self-care routines to evolve. Fast-forward through more acting roles, the birth of her daughter and the start of her wellness website, and Tisdale’s me-time rituals now look a little different.

Mornings begin at 6 am with meditation and evenings end with spa-like baths, both facilitated by Tisdale’s exclusive new Target line, Being French. “My job is to bathe, shower and enjoy self-care,” jokes the High School Musical alum. Of course, there’s also the less glamorous day-to-day activities and marketing that goes into running a business. But it’s all about balance, right? Here, Tisdale takes a look at the habits, beauty products, and foods that keep her sane.

Inner beauty

early morning meditations

Because I struggle with anxiety, I know that I always need to be on top of my self-care, not just for myself, but for my daughter as well. I don’t want to be anxious around her again or put my anxiety on her. I really make an effort to get up early in the morning and meditate before I catch her when she wakes up. When I feel a little weird, I admit that I feel that way and that it’s okay. I have tools to help me, and sometimes that means doing an extra meditation that day. I have a lot going on and a lot going on, so it can be stressful. When I’m in a state of [being] overwhelm[ed]I can quickly say, well, maybe instead of doing just one meditation today, I’ll do two. Paying attention to those feelings and not being afraid of them has helped me the most.

bath time

There are moments after my daughter has gone to bed that I tell my husband that I just need my time to myself. And that definitely looks like a luxurious bathroom with candles and dim lights. I love to exfoliate and do a hair mask and take on some pink. I really love using my Being Frenche bath bombs because they have a mood-enhancing scent, which I love. I also love doing detox baths. Sometimes I use Goop Detox bath salts. I listen to spa music. I create a complete spa experience. I really appreciate that moment and I really take pleasure in it. I started doing this during the pandemic. I couldn’t go to the spa and outsource that feeling of relaxation, so I started doing it at home. And to be honest, I actually like it better at home, and it’s less expensive.

reiki rituals

I am someone who loves things like Reiki. When you have a really good Reiki Master it can change your life. My first experience was the most transformative. It was incredible. I don’t even want to explain it because people will think I’m crazy. I feel like I left my body. I was in the room, but I was not physically in my body. In fact, it made me anxious for a second. I was like, can I go back to my body? Obviously I did. When they talk about the higher self, that’s where I was. It made me feel that life had meaning.

He did it regularly when we were in Malibu for the summer. We rented a place there and I did reiki sessions at a meditation place called Mindry. Each time it was a different experience and I loved it. When you come out of it, your nervous system is calmer than ever and you realize that this is how you should be operating at all times. It’s like a massage for your soul.

Science-Backed Skin Care

I love everything about my dermatologist. I am a big fan of getting skin care from your dermatologist because I really feel like they know your skin better from him. My dermatologist, Christie Kidd, has her own line and it’s not about having a big routine, she’s more of a minimalist. If I am wearing a lot of makeup, I will use an enzymatic face oil from Mara. And then my skincare is Perfect Skin—it’s clean. I then use just an eye cream and PCA Skin Hydraluxe Intensive Hydration at night to hydrate.

minimal makeup

It’s very natural these days. With a baby, you just don’t have a lot of time. I like glowing skin and lip balms. The mascara is too big for me, as is the bronzer. I love Kosas mascara because it is clean. I also can’t live without my Bobbi Brown bronzer. I’ve had it forever and use it all the time. It gives me a bronzed glow, even in winter. It’s matte, not shiny, which I like. I also think the Rhode Peptide lip treatment is really amazing. I love to go out and have a moment where I can do my makeup, but it rarely happens. If so, I’ll do a little cat eye for the night and a bold lip to switch it up. I used to wear a lot of makeup when I was younger, but I don’t feel the need to anymore.

Negative Heat Styling

The journey of my hair has been great. We’ve been through a lot. Obviously, back when I was a bleach blonde, it was hard on my hair. I also had extensions for so long. I gave up extensions about six years ago and have never looked back. The most difficult thing has been the hair colors. I love all hair colors on me and feel like I am one of those skin tones that can go a long way. I think I’ve done every one of them, to be honest. The hardest though was the pink, it kind of killed my hair. It was a good era and it was a lot of fun, but I definitely took a lot of damage.

Now I really love taking care of my hair like I take care of myself. I love doing deep conditioners by simply shaking out my natural hair. I have adopted the natural texture of my hair, which is curly. Sometimes he’s wild and crazy, but he’s cute and he’s very wholesome. Occasionally I’ll just slide it back. You know there was this trend where it was like you know there was an Olaplex treatment on my hair? I’ve been rocking that for a long time.

Recipe for Success: Ashley’s Lemon Poppy Seed Muffin

These are so good if I’m trying to indulge and do something special.

I am a great baker. But I’m also gluten-free and dairy-free, so I love making vegan gluten-free lemon poppy seed muffins. It’s one of my favorite things because there aren’t many gluten free and vegan places to get baked goods. They are homemade from scratch and honestly not very chewy. Obviously I use gluten free flour. That’s a lot of lemons. And it has some sugar, you can’t eliminate everything. It’s just a recipe I found on Pinterest from A pinch of Megnut.
