The road to success is paved with failure…for some. Others, like Brittany Burke, seem born to succeed from the start. The Detroit native’s mother, whose own journey culminated in her job as spokesperson for Ford, had clearly seen something special in her daughter before she secretly sent photos to Chicago’s revered Select Model Management. Burke was signed by the agency the day she made an in-person appearance.

That initial success was not a happy fluke, but rather an omen. Burke would soon find himself in a throng of hopefuls vying hard for a New York Fashion Week booking with Calvin Klein. “I remember running from one place to another, from casting to casting,” she recalls. “I was exhausted and passed out in bed when I got home. But my mind was made up; all I wanted was to sign Calvin Klein, even though I never dreamed it would happen.”

On the day of the casting, Burke eagerly awaited the audition for the directors of Calvin Klein. She was one of a room full, then a handful, then a few. Her “angelic” agent at the time approached with a somber look… only to do a quick one and inform her that she would be walking for the preeminent fashion brand at NYFW and closing the show. Not bad for Burke’s first runway experience.

“Then there was the fitting process, where the clothes were specially tailored to my body, which meant that I was one of their signature models. I worked one on one with the legendary designer Francisco Costa and it was amazing”.

As Burke was leaving the Calvin Klein headquarters after a long day of fitting, a scout beckoned him with a serendipitous opportunity: a meeting with none other than Ralph Lauren. “The talent scout led me into this room of models wearing beautiful beaded burlesque couture gowns. Ralph came out, shook my hand, and told me to try on a dress and heels. I walked for him in his study. I’ll never forget that day”.

Burke went on to model for Ralph Lauren online; Victoria’s Secret and Dior are other dream jobs. Her portfolio is bolstered with spreads for companies like Vanity Fair and Marie Claire. More than 233,000 Instagram followers are transfixed by Burke’s classic beauty, whether she’s featured in a lingerie-clad artistic magazine photo or a goofy behind-the-scenes clip. But it’s not the brands she’s posed for or the following she’s earned that make Burke tick.

“The highlights of my career aren’t necessarily the great jobs I’ve done, but the travels and the people I’ve met,” he tells us. “From Milan and Paris to Miami and Mexico. If it wasn’t for modeling, I wouldn’t be in New York, I wouldn’t have seen the world, or met these amazing people.”
