Loungewear meets streetwear at Ann Arbor designer’s debut fashion show

ANN ARBOR, MI — Casual wear will meet street wear in an inaugural fashion show hosted by an Ann Arbor store.

ArtCareShop, located in Briarwood Mall, is hosting its first-ever fashion show and Y2K-themed party from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, October 8 at 500 E. Liberty St. The show itself starts at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 20 minutes. .

Wives Julia and Dakota Brown opened ArtCareShop as an Esty store in 2020 after Julia was inspired to design clothes she struggled to find during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I had all these sets of businesses and I couldn’t find anything specifically for the pandemic,” Brown said.

The couple opened a physical location in the mall in April 2021.

Brown’s designs are a mix of streetwear and loungewear, she said, with many of the concepts inspired by the early 2000s. The brand also focuses on making fashion-forward, non-binary clothing.

“I was like, how can I adapt this for modern days? So I did high-waisted paintings, I did the short quarters of the hoodie,” Brown said. It’s kind of a reinvention, but it’s still inspired.”

The pieces play with a variety of fabrics, including cotton, wool, hemp, recycled polyester, and fabrics made from corn and wood.

The party and fashion show will feature a stand-up comedian, the Ricewood BBQ restaurant caterer, a cash bar and a temporary tattoo station. The show will have 30 outfits and it is the first time that Brown will see his entire collection in one place.

“Usually I do one piece at a time, and it takes me about six months to do one piece,” he said. “So it’s very exciting to watch.”

The show is open to those 21 and older. Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door. Event bracelets will also allow entry to Necto, 516 E. Liberty St., from 9-10 pm for an after party.
