Just about everything you need to know about High Sport, a new luxury sportswear brand, can be summed up in the comments on their Instagram.
“Please tell me these pants will be available to order soon.” “The whole look. I need it.” “I want these damn pants!”
Those commenters are using multiple emojis because of a simple initial list: crewneck sweaters, midi skirts and dresses, and wide leg pants, all offered in chunky, performance knits with a hint of stretch. High Sport’s devoted (and growing) fans are particularly obsessed with its knit flared trousers, in a range of colors from fluorescent orange to sky blue. Only three picky retailers in person were selling the High Sport at first, meaning only a handful of informed shoppers were able to buy the pants. The rest were left to ask for stock lists in the comments section and wait, until High Sport finally hit Moda Operandi last week.

Alissa Zachary, founder of High Sport, knew from her previous merchandising experience at The Row and Khaite that the best clothing always ticked three boxes: “easy to style, easy to wear and easy to care for,” she tells BAZAAR.com.
The sports pants, without hardware with a calce without laces and a hem that accentuates the footwear, fulfilled all those criteria. It was also the first High Sport piece that Zachary designed. He knew it could be easily styled, whether it was with a matching knitted top from his line and strappy heels or a white blouse and loafers. He did not anticipate the answer: “I don’t think I knew from the beginning that this would be our winning article,” says Zachary.
Four years in development later, Zachary believes the pants came at the perfect time. Right now, “we want to take pride in ourselves and the way we dress, but the expectation has changed: [want] to be comfortable,” she explains. “People seem to like this kind of hybrid idea of a beautiful tailored pant worn like a leotard.”
First, the popularity of the pants caught Zachary by surprise, then High Sport fans’ preference for candy wrapper colors over basic neutrals surprised her again. “My instinct working in fashion was that we would show the purple and sell the black. You always show the dream and then you sell the reality,” she says. “I never expected people to gravitate towards color the way they have. Maybe that’s also a factor in re-emerging in the world and wanting to make a statement and take pride in your clothing.”
Pants may be fans’ first love, but it won’t be their last. Jaclyn Alexandra Cohen, fashion and accessories editor at BAZAAR, tells me that High Sport’s boxy blazer is her current “wish list item.” “It’s the perfect balance of structure and comfort, and everything that makes American sportswear so desirable: uncompromising luxury,” she says.

Could be? A line that exceeds the expectations you put on Instagram? High Sport designer believes yes: “These clothes are much more interesting in the world than in a vacuum.” Or through a screen.
