Exploring the style journey of Cub Sport frontman Tim Nelson

“I’m like in a more daring and slutty ethereal phase.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’re introducing a new series Hey I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favorite creatives. We’re talking about the good, the bad, and 2007.

Although the Internet has made our fashion icons Feel closer than ever, even the simplest outfits come from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives, and narrated lives in 30-second clips just don’t tell the whole story.

For more fashion news, photo shoots, articles and reports, head over to our Fashion section.

These are the stories behind the closets, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a sparkle behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know that every outfit has a story.

This week we’ll delve into the personal style of Australian producer, songwriter and Cub Sport frontman Tim Nelson. Over a decade since the group Meanjin formed, and Cub Sport is releasing their fifth studio album (aptly coming out on Good Friday), Jesus At The Gay Bar. Looking back on the evolution of his wardrobe, Tim talks about the skinny jeans, her ethereal era, and how to wear a Rick Owens skirt at Starbucks.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

My name is Tim Nelson. I am a singer/songwriter/producer of the Meanjin band Cub Sport. I like to wear anything that I feel hot in. At the moment, I quite like tank tops/fitted tops and slightly baggy pants with big shoes.

How has your style evolved? Do you feel that you have gained confidence in the way you dress?

I think I’m on an upward trajectory. When I was 17 years old I wanted to look like The Horrors. I dyed my hair black and messed it up as much as I could. I would only wear the tightest black jeans and patent leather tips. Then, I went through kind of a preppy phase where I wanted to look like a cross between Gossip Girl and Twilight.

Then I went through my ethereal era, started bleaching my hair and used as much white/clear as possible and now I’m in a more edgy, slutty ethereal phase. I think I have gained more confidence in the way I dress and [in] trying new things

And I think it’s true what people say, that false confidence leads to real confidence. I wore my Rick Owens skirt to our Westfield location for Starbucks the other day, it felt good.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

There were a few years between my Horrors phase and my coming out where there was a disconnect between how I felt on the inside and how I presented myself to the world. I guess I tried to dress to blend in a little more to try [and] be more ‘direct’. The result was a bunch of very average outfits.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you regret fashion?

Without regrets! I loved to skate when I was in high school and I think I actually had a pretty good style. One funny thing I remember is that he would buy the biggest jeans he could find at Target, and then he would have Mom sew on them skate brand patches. She was getting a lot of compliments from the skate bros at the bowl.

What are the most expensive and least expensive clothes in your closet?

The most expensive item is a red velvet Gucci suit. It is vintage from 1996, designed by Tom Ford. It’s the exact same type that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 1996 VMAs. In 2018 I walked into a vintage store in Soho NYC and saw it and got goosebumps.

I emptied my bank account buying that suit, but then I was able to wear it at the ARIAs for our first red carpet, and it looked amazing. I’m excited to lend it to my nieces or something someday. [The] less expensive might be a pair of goggles we picked up at the hardware store the other day, they’re pretty good.

What is the most significant fashion piece you own?

I recently bought a necklace from Homer, it’s like a little aquatic alien with diamonds. Frank Ocean is a huge inspiration to me in all of his creative endeavours, so he was very excited to get some of the jewelry from him. I have a bit of a superstition where I feel like my throat chakra and voice are more supported/open when I wear a necklace that has something blue on it.

What’s in your cart right now?

Custom recycled jeans by Melbourne designer Sean David McCallum. I wore a pair of his jeans for a photo shoot recently and they were so good I had to get a pair.

What fashion item are you saving for right now?

I’m pretty obsessed with the Dsquared2 Fall 2023 show, maybe a few pieces from that collection.

What are the wardrobe items that you wear repeatedly?

I have worn my Prada monolith loafers a lot. Also this pair of leather Jean Paul Gautier jeans that I bought at a vintage store in Los Angeles in 2019; they have been in high rotation for about four years.

Who are your favorite local designers?

I love Alix Higgins, Pigsuit, Strateas Carlucci, Song For The Mute, Raga Malak, Olivia Rowan.
