Eight Spring Summer 2023 Fashion Month trends to know now

Phew. After everything from mud to fights (ironically, one person was involved in both) and Cher to fabric in a can, fashion month has come to an end. While we’re still dissecting the news cycle, sifting through Instagram and TikTok, and zooming in on runway image details while doubling down on coffee, the undoubted trends of the moment have come to the fore. This is what we can’t stop thinking…

the glass piece

One almost needed sunglasses, the catwalks were so lit up with eye-catching sparkles all season long. Crystallized dresses, skirts, wide-leg pants and, in Khaite’s case, jacket lapels quite literally brightened up our outlook for Spring Summer ’23. Blame it on our need to capture everything on Instagram, but we can’t argue that a brilliant number is surely good content these days.

pure factor

I see London, I see France, I see everyone’s underpants. That will be the mood come Spring Summer 23, when we all throw caution to the wind and embrace sexy, sheer gowns that leave little to the imagination. Designers including Lanvin
Bruno Sialelli, Miuccia & Raf, Alberta Ferretti and Marcelo Gaia of Mirror Palais chose to go the transparent route on everything from maxis to trench coats. It makes sense, when you think about it, as there is an undeniable sense of freedom, brashness and sensuality in these pieces, and what more could we want after years of rigid rules, confinement and desolation. For a more modest approach of the moment, Tory Burch’s 90s-style midi skirts with her sheer tops are sure to be on many people’s wish lists.

GLUNGE!

While it may sound like what a TV host on a retro game show would yell before the contestants get sloshed in slime, we’re actually referring to that hybrid of glam and grunge that’s been prevalent for the past decade. If you close your eyes and think about it, you can instantly conjure up images of this girl/guy: there are layers of close-fitting basics covered with a boxy biker jacket, coat or blazer. Those Y2K gas station shades seem to be ubiquitous, as does spiked hardware and silver jewelry. Perhaps the catsuit’s sleeves extend into gloves and the pants appear to be seamless with her platform boots. Maybe this person is friends with Julia Fox. This season, as usual, there was plenty for her/him/them at Rick Owens and Balenciaga (just watch out for Lay’s crunchy tote to make the rounds), but also at LAPOINTE , Versace and even Saint Laurent, where we think you’ll swipe right for hooded pieces, jackets with rounded shoulders and high-gloss finishes.

skirting the problem

Let’s talk about skirts, which, I will say for once, seemed to be the focal points of most of the collections. Blame it on Miu Miu’s viral miniskirts from last year, but skirts seemed to get a lot of attention and reinvention this time around. While they may not be the most practical silhouettes on paper, panniers (like the hoop skirts worn in the 17th and 18th centuries) won us over thanks to their treatment at Lanvin, Bach Mai, Monse, Loewe and Dior. Pockets were played with at Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, and elsewhere, calf-length denim, leather, and bubble-hem skirts looked like they were going to knock the miniskirt off its pedestal. Another trend to watch out for: wear your fanciest skirt with your simplest top! Now there’s one we can all try at home…

fringe benefits

How we love a shimmy. Everything from skirts and dresses to tassel-edged blouses seemed to be going great this season, with a particular effect on Proenza Schouler, PatBo, Jonathan Simkhai, Jil Sander and Bottega Veneta. Sound activated for full effect!

luxury exotic

Snakeskin is slipping back onto our watch list, and we can definitely blame Khaite for that. Elsewhere, we notice high-octane animal numbers found with metallic numbers we’re christening Luxe Exotica. All eyes on you: guaranteed.

optimistic tones

While fuchsia pink is here to stay and the soft bisque hue seemed to reign supreme when it came to the chicest of chic (see: Lanvin, Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta et al), we felt our hearts skip a beat with all the serotonin-inducing shades of sunshine yellow, turquoise, lilac, and green. Particularly the latter, known to be a lucky color. Get it where you can, kids!

precious loads

Well, why would the abundant obsession with all things Y2K stop anytime soon? Add cargo pants to the assembly list. With deals on every shade and fabric, you’ll be starring in your very own RN ‘B music video at home before you know it.
