4 sneaker trends that will be massive in 2023

A key part of any modern wardrobe, trainers are essential for work and weekends, vacations and hiking, and everything in between.

No longer the last thing on your mind when planning an outfit, joggers are at the forefront of fashion, with macro and micro trends popping up all the time.

So how should you be accessorizing your outfits right now? We asked sportswear experts for their predictions on the trends that will be big in 2023…

1. Soccer silhouettes

“We saw a renaissance of classic soccer silhouettes last year and that’s something I think we’ll see continue through 2023,” says Derek Morrison, EMEA General Manager at StockX. Possibly the most classic style, the Adidas Samba is booming on StockX.

Soccer was a major topic of conversation at the end of 2022, and it looks set to continue next year.

“Argentina Samba trades saw a spike during the World Cup final,” says Morrison. “With more exciting soccer events like the Women’s World Cup taking place this summer, we look forward to an even greater focus on the sport in 2023.”

2. Heritage inspirations

Minimalism takes a backseat this year as attention-grabbing kicks come to the fore.

“The shapes and colors are experimental for 2023, giving an effortless lift to the look,” says Donna Hill, Gola’s director of public relations and marketing.

“Styles are featured with classic sporty luxe details combined with heritage hallmarks and unique material combinations.”

Make a pair of colorful sneakers your daily accessory, she says. “With sneakers now becoming more prevalent in everyday style, the boundaries of the smart-casual wardrobe will be pushed even further.”

As trends come and go faster than ever, sneakerheads are constantly on the hunt for the next big thing.

“With Dunks and Jordan fatigue, we’re seeing a massive rise in comfort-savvy brands like Salomon, proving that substance can be stylish,” says George Sullivan, CEO and founder of The Sole Supplier.

“Our new UNTIED report shows that ‘gorpcore’ is a big trend, with shoes incorporating GORE-TEX technology for performance styles and a rugged aesthetic.”

Gorp means ‘good raisins and peanuts’, also known as the trail mix that outdoor enthusiasts munch on. Urbanites are embracing the hiking look and making it their own, with ‘ugly’ sneakers at the top of their wish lists.

4.New Balance 550s

Looking for a shortcut to freshen up? Get yourself a pair of New Balance 550s, says Morrison: “Nicknamed the ‘daddy trainer,’ the 550 has been seen on some of the trendiest celebrities, including Kendall Jenner, Justin Bieber, and Bella Hadid.”

Available in tons of colors, from relaxed neutrals to bold blues and reds, these basketball-inspired sneakers are a must-have in 2023.

“The silhouette manages to retain its influence due to the many colorways and iterations released, including collaborations with Aimé Leon Dore and Comme Des Garçons,” says Morrison. “We expect new variations of the 550 this year that further elevate the silhouette.”
