11 tips you should know before playing

When you first get to grips with Gotham Knights, it can be a counterintuitive mix of familiar mechanics grafted onto a confusing hodgepodge of systems from other games. There’s Arkham-inspired melee combat, a Destiny-style progression system, and RPG elements that can lure you into the false sense that you’re playing as Diablo. Here are some tips to eliminate clutter and bring order to chaos in a city without Batman.

Most of the character progression sticks, so switch heroes as many times as you like.

At the start of Gotham Knights, you have the option to start the game with one of four members of the Bat Family. You may think that this choice would block you from the other three vigilantes, but that is not the case. Even the game makes it clear that you can freely switch characters whenever you want by simply returning to the gang’s base of operations. the bell tower, although it is very quickly overlooked and only mentioned again in the game’s database. From there, behind the research bulletin board and to the right of the training team, are the four suits lined up in open cases. Interacting with them changes your character. And don’t worry, each member levels up at the same time, so you won’t lose any progression.

You should seriously explore the open world

Gotham City isn’t as big an open world as, say, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s 11th-century England, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect any of its many dynamic side activities. Bank robberies, gang hideouts, homicide investigations, stolen vehicles – pretty much everything he does (except for beating up the cops) gives you some experience points and/or crafting materials. There’s also plenty of loot to uncover, collectibles to uncover, and goons to cover (on land). Additionally, you’ll need to traverse the open world to progress through some of the game’s main quests, as well as unlock the various superhero outfits and color combinations available to safeguard in style. So you better get used to your regularly scheduled night patrol in Gotham early on.

Practice, practice, practice those perfect attacks and dodges

Gotham Knights is totally okay with you fighting your way through combat. Find some thugs committing crimes on the streets of Gotham and bash their skulls by repeatedly pressing the attack button. Great, no problem. But if you want to deal more damage while quickly filling your boost meter (a bar that allows you to perform character-specific unlockable combat abilities), then you’ll need to be good at perfect attacks. But you can only become adept at perfect attacks by practicing perfect dodges, which are achieved by dodging at the last possible second before an enemy’s attack connects to your dome. Do that and you’ll get this satisfying semi-slow-mo dodge that leaves your opponent open to a perfect high-damage counter. Now you can hit bad guys with style.

Complete those cavalry challenge missions ASAP

Since Gotham is in constant danger, the game will present you with numerous challenges and missions to complete on a regular basis. One of the first available revolves around knighthood, the chance to become the vigilante Gotham needs and gain the trust of the city’s inhabitants. That’s fine, stepping up to be Gotham’s protector after Batman’s death, but you’ll want to complete the Knighthood challenges sooner for a totally different reason: to unlock the unique transportation ability for each member of the Bat Family. It is, however, a bit tedious. You have to finish the Timed Strikes training mission, stop 10 Premeditated Crimes and defeat three minibosses. You also have to do these challenges with each character to complete their Knight title, meaning this is the only instance where level progression doesn’t carry over between families.

But finishing them and earning a Knighthood unlocks that character’s fast travel method, such as Batgirl’s Batman-like Cape Glide or Nightwing’s technological equivalent, the Mechanical Glider. Now you have more ways to get around Gotham City besides the grappling hook or the batcycle.

Make the numbers go up

You can only craft gear in The Belfry, so make sure to upgrade your gear before you go out on patrol. Usually it’s just a matter of crafting the blueprint with the highest total power level. But there are also other wrinkles to consider, such as health packages. Different armors come with different amounts of heals, so if you’re bad at not getting shot, make sure your loadout has room for more than a few.

Prioritize gear with elemental effects

Don’t just pay attention to how big the numbers are when comparing different melee and ranged weapons. Some also drop with elemental effects that stack damage over time. Even if these don’t line up perfectly with an enemy’s weakness, they’ll still deal a lot more bonus damage that shortens the work of tougher enemies.

Don’t forget to dismantle your seedy team

Throw away old things early and often. You’ll get some resources for doing so and keep your inventory more manageable.

Unlock fast travel early

Gotham has a lot of ground to cover, and unless you want to feel like an overnight Uber driver heading north and south across the city’s many bridges, you’ll need to unlock fast travel points. After the Blackgate Penitentiary incident with Harley Quinn, you’ll receive a message from Lucius Fox about new gadgets, including one that will get you from one district to another in the blink of an eye.

However, to unlock each district’s fast travel point, you’ll need to chase down the police drones and disable them. Doing this for each district early on will reduce time wasted on subsequent patrols. It will also be easier if you already have Nightwing’s glider unlocked or one of the other heroes’ special traversal abilities.

Don’t miss the loot chests

Crime doesn’t pay, but shutting it down does. If you hit a bunch of thugs on patrol, there will likely be a chest with bonus rewards nearby. A smoking flare near where the enemies were is a surefire sign, so use your scanner and briefly check for any additional crafting resources.

Save rare caches for later

Gotham City is full of Talon caches and other rare finds, but because gear scales with your level, unlocking them early will result in loot that quickly becomes outdated. Instead, you’ll want to wait until later in the game to grab stuff and be guaranteed legendary and epic drops.

Play online to divide and beat

Gotham Knights boss battles and city patrols can be fun alone, but they’re much easier to tackle with a partner. Also, combat is much more fun with someone else around. Warner Bros. Montreal worked hard to make the game’s online multiplayer stable but untethered, and if you don’t play co-op, you won’t get the “full” Gotham Knights experience. Also, you can tackle objectives scattered around the map much faster with an extra scout on the prowl. Best of all, instead of resetting when you die, your partner can revive you to keep things moving forward.
