Consistency is key when it comes to Zooey Deschanel’s beauty routine. The actress and musician has never strayed far from the dark bangs and rosy lips that are a hallmark of her personal style. However, her retro-inspired look never goes out of style, and that’s partly due to the ethics behind her purchasing choices.
Long before it became de rigueur for every famous person to at least publicly subscribe and expound on how to live an eco-conscious lifestyle, Deschanel was living it. For years, he has talked about more sustainable brands and urged people to stop using plastic water bottles and adopt a more plant-based diet.
It’s about making smart (more) decisions when possible. To that end, Deschanel partners with the Merryfield app, which connects consumers to “better-for-you” products that are judged to be kinder to the planet. She’s a big fan of Stasher’s reusable silicone bags, for example, which she says are a godsend for packing lunches and snacks for her two children.
“One of the reasons I co-founded that company is because we have a strict set of standards, both for foods that are better for you, and for brands that are making better choices on an ecological level,” he says. “The main obstacle for people to do things in a green way is mainly convenience. People want things to be convenient.”
When it comes to the products she uses on her face, body, and hair, Deschanel is equally conscientious. She reads the labels. She pays attention to the mission of certain brands, especially since the term “clean beauty” doesn’t make any sense because it’s not regulated at all. And above all, she is aware of what works for her. Here, Deschanel shares her favorite beauty products.
Retinol is the holy grail of skincare because it helps stimulate elastin and collagen production, which can make you look younger. But it’s not for everyone, especially someone with very sensitive skin. So Deschanel found a solution. “I use bakuchiol, which is like an alternative to retinol,” she says. “I have very sensitive skin and can’t use retinol. It just dries it up.” Bakuchiol, on the other hand, is a plant-based skincare ingredient that touts retinol-like anti-aging effects, without the side effects. “It doesn’t dry out my skin, I use it every day and I use the Herbivore brand,” she says.
Deschanel doesn’t use shower gels due to plastic waste. And with bar soaps, she’s as basic as it gets. “I use bar soap because it’s so much better for the environment,” he explains. “I haven’t gotten into the bar shampoo yet; I would love to find a shampoo bar because that’s better too. We only use Dove Sensitive. I have sensitive skin and it’s just a regular bar of soap.”
Fun fact: Eminence sources its ingredients from its own organic farms, in Hungary and elsewhere. And the products are handmade. “I love Eminence Probiotic Moisturizer,” says Deschanel. “That is a product that I can always use, no matter what. Sometimes if I’m tired or something else I start to get breakouts and then I have to stop using all other moisturizers. That’s the only one that won’t break. [my] skinning at all.”
Celebrity makeup artist Gucci Westman founded this luxury line that is as beautiful as it is streamlined. “For makeup, I love Westman Atelier,” says Deschanel. “I love their products – they are eco-friendly, vegan and clean beauty options. Everything seems to be made for the busy person who needs to get ready quickly.”
Less is always more for Deschanel, and she’s a big fan of this 4-in-1 lip kit, a richly pigmented formula made with cold-pressed cherry oil. “Westman Atelier, they have a really great lip palette. [with] four different lipsticks. Just throw that in your bag and grab a little lip brush,” she says.
“Another clean beauty company that also makes it easy to get your face done very quickly is Merit,” says Deschanel. “Merit is fantastic and has all kinds of everything. [The Flush Balm is] a little small and you can just screw on the top and put on your cheek color. They are great colored pencils for cheeks.”
For the most part, Deschanel, when in mom mode, keeps things simple and streamlined. But when he needs a moment of wonder, he turns to this Chanel lipstick, a vibrant coral red with warm undertones and a high-gloss finish.
The beauty line of the former Posh Spice stands out, especially this product. “The eyeliner glides on very easily and stays on very well! There is no eyeliner that compares, and they have the best colors,” says the actor.

“This is essential! There are all the neutral colors in a palette,” says Deschanel, who uses this game, created by Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist, when he wants to add a bit of drama.
She is a fan of this line of luxury shampoos, made with plant-based formulas. This particular one uses a vegan silk keratin to smooth and help repair damaged hair. “I just started using [this shampoo], and I like it,” she says. “It’s supposed to clean your scalp. I have been using it for the last two months.”
