You know how today’s beauty brands compete for the widest shade and tone makeup palettes? Yes, it wasn’t always like that. Over the decades, the beauty industry has been driven to evolve toward inclusion thanks in no small part to Black women and men blazing their own trails, founding their own brands, creating content and gracing the covers of magazines, and found massive success along the way.

It is this influence that The Black Beauty Effect, a three-part docuseries set to air on Xfinity in the fall, explores. As filmmaker Andrea Lewis explains in a statement announcing the upcoming series: “I always wanted to create a story that would capture the full extent of our impact on the beauty industry, from celebrity makeup artists, Black beauty editors, and countless beauty professionals. the beauty. content creators. Lewis enlisted influencer Jackie Aina and beauty expert and editor Kahlana Barfield Brown as executive producers, and they share their own experiences throughout the film. Industry veterans including Comcast Xfinity’s Keesha Boyd and FaceForward Productions’ CJ Faison are also executive producers on the film.

Each hour-long episode will be dedicated to a different aspect of beauty: hair, skin, makeup. Expect familiar faces like host and editor Elaine Welteroth, celebrity makeup artist Sir John and Bob the Drag Queen, as well as beauty founders like Topicals’ Olamide Olowe, Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa Price and Lip Bar’s Melissa Butler, all with candid conversations. about more than the glamorous side of the industry.
