Velus Jones Jr. announces his return in an explosive way

Velus Jones was unavailable for the Chicago Bears’ preseason opener against Kansas City. He was dealing with an undisclosed injury. So people had high hopes for his debut in Seattle against the Seahawks. Things didn’t start very well. He had a nice 30-yard kickoff return to open the game, but fumbled late in the game. Hopefully it was nervousness and he could adjust as things progressed. Those hopes were fulfilled.

After a good 52-yard drive by the offense, the Bears’ defense forced a punt from the Seahawks on the next drive. Jones had another chance to make a play. He did not disappoint. The third-round pick delivered the kick and ran back 48 yards. His trademark speed was on full display. Despite all the talk about his age at 25, the wide receiver was able to remind people that there’s a reason he’s in the NFL. He has an important talent.

Velus Jones can help open up this Bears offense.

That kind of speed is rare, even for the NFL. It was one of the main reasons GM Ryan Poles drafted him. However, his abilities go beyond running fast. His speed, agility and strength are other reasons. The guy is dangerous with the ball in his hands. That play is an example of it. Not surprisingly, the Bears decided not to use him much offensively for the rest of the game. They are not going to show their hand over the plans they have.

Velus Jones is a weapon. They think they have something special in their repertoire. The punt return was just a small sample of what they’ve seen in practice over the past month. If he can carry this big-playing ability into the regular season, the Bears will suddenly become a much more dangerous football team. He and Darnell Mooney can make a nasty combination. No doubt the coaches are eager for the real games to begin.
