Recently, the Ukrainian brand BOBKOVA presented a new collection called “MRIYA (Dream)” at the berlin fashion week in Kant Garage. The show was made possible by a grant for Ukrainian designers from the NEWEST (German Fashion Council) project.

The MRIYA collection is full of contrasts: delicate feminine lace and soft knitwear speak of the search for inner comfort, and rough military blazers embody the courage of a fighter. Bobkova pays close attention to how a woman feels in her clothes and how she adapts them to life, which is constantly changing.

The sensuality of lace is one of the main accents. Brings finesse to BOBKOVA’s signature minimalist looks, from 1990s lace-trimmed maxi dresses and bras worn over shirts to patchwork minidresses and flared skirts teamed with 1990s Ardi-era Françoise-style leather boots 60. Allusions to military uniforms tell the story of female soldiers: safari-esque suits with skirts and blazers with huge patch pockets represent a refined, grown-up take on practical functionality. The word MRIYA adorns metal rings stylized as brass knuckles.

The philosophy of upcycling reigns in this collection, heroically created in the Kyiv workshop in the context of the critical conditions of the war. Focusing on manual labor was a pragmatic decision when machines regularly shut down due to power outages. From fabric scraps and remnants of woven material, the artisans created new products and decorative details using crochet and patchwork techniques known and practiced for centuries in the Ukrainian countryside. Recycling helps the workshop to minimize waste and develop a sustainable approach. The designer, for whom sustainability is a principle of thought, buys fabrics in Italy from surplus rolls from luxury brands to support a conscious second cycle of use of surplus materials in the fashion industry.

At just 23 years old and a graduate of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, Ukrainian Kristina Bobkova founded her eponymous brand. She has been a part of Ukraine Fashion Week since 1998 and since then she has been presenting her handmade ready-to-wear accessories and shoes in her home country.

Since BOBKOVA was founded, the label has been synonymous with confident femininity. Combining feminine silhouettes with unmistakable straight Japanese cuts, the designer pursues a superior fashion sense, that is, breaking gender stereotypes.
