You might be tempted to skip the tutorial, but it’s almost essential for Naraka, given his unorthodox mix of adventuring, fast-paced melee combat, and character abilities. The tutorial gives you a crash course in the basics of Naraka’s movement and combat, which are essential to surviving after your initial clashes with the training bots.

Speaking of training, it’s also a good idea to use the training mode and familiarize yourself with the game before taking on human players. It’s a safe space to practice combos, get used to how weapons are handled, and experiment with movement, including the Grappling Hook.

Use the grappling hook frequently

The Grappling Hook is great for letting you get to tricky spots quickly, as you’d expect, but you can also use the aiming reticle to find other players. The reticle turns red whenever it lands on an opponent, and you can plan your attack from there or use the hook to get close to your enemy and surprise them.

If you jump and then use the grappling hook, you can get on top of enemies and use downward swipes to potentially knock them down.

Learn Naraka’s Hierarchy of Attack

Naraka Bladepoint has an unofficial hierarchy of moves that you should learn as soon as you can. The three types of attack are:

Normal Attack Focus Attack (Blue) Parry

Parry stops focus attacks, but cannot stop normal attacks. Concentration attacks nullify normal attacks.

It’s a simple system on the surface, but once you get deeper into the game, it’s vital to take advantage of it to gain an advantage and outwit your opponents by predicting and interrupting their attacks.

Vary your combos

You can be sure that other players will also anticipate your attacks, so try to make it difficult for them. For example, the basic three-hit combo that uses two normal attacks and a focused attack is a popular choice, but it’s also predictable. Using it too often leaves you open to parrying your enemies’ attacks, as they know exactly when your focus attack will land.

You can insert a number of alternate attacks into your combo chains, including air attacks, hooks, or even ladder attacks, executed by attacking from a wall or tree, to throw your enemy off balance and keep yourself safe.

If you think your opponent is about to parry your attack, you can cancel it by running or crouching and then using a normal attack to catch them off guard. Alternatively, you could keep charging the attack until it finishes its parry and land it anyway.

Use your items (except when you shouldn’t)

It’s easy to forget your consumables in the heat of battle, but a well-timed healing item can make a world of difference in the blink of an eye. If you run (press the Shift key) after using it, you can still keep moving while consuming the item.

Outside of battle, be sure to take advantage of the elements in the environment. Prickly Pears restores your health, while Salek restores armor and Dandelions create stealth effects for the next minute. It’s a convenient way to conserve your consumables and still restore your health.

Use more than one weapon

You’ll naturally gravitate toward one or two specific weapons that complement your style, but it’s good to add at least one different type to your arsenal. A ranged weapon is ideal if you normally play melee, and the other way around if you primarily use ranged. In team matches, be sure to coordinate with your teammates to cover any eventualities and avoid weapon duplication.

Use your souljades

Souljades provide passive buffs, like increased health or increased damage resistance, so it’s crucial to find them and use them whenever you can. The best place to find Souljades is in a loot pile with a green tint, as they are (usually) guaranteed to be there.

Be flexible

Naraka rewards players who adapt their style on the fly to take advantage of any situation. For example, if you see another group of players pausing to heal or collect loot, that’s a good time to dash in and attack while they’re vulnerable. Alternatively, if two opponents are fighting each other, wait until the battle is over before joining, so you can take out the winner while they’re still wounded.

However, at the beginning of a match, it often pays to play aggressively. If you win your encounters, you have a better chance of getting high-quality loot. If you lose, you can still return, albeit with lesser quality gear, and get an additional chance to win as a ghost.

Keep moving

When 24 Entertainment says Naraka: Bladepoint is all about movement, they’re not kidding. Staying on the move during combat is key once you start taking on higher level opponents. The last thing you want to do is stand still to attack.

Dashing between hits or pushing enemies back with short jumps or air attacks is a solid strategy for staying out of their range, getting around their defenses, and keeping them guessing on your next move.
