Combat and Crusade Tips

Immersing yourself in the land of Old Faith can be difficult, as you’ll never experience the same challenges twice, but these tips can help you prepare for what’s to come.

Cult DevotionSteal.jpg

The beginning of each combat area has a statue of the region’s boss, and you can steal Devotion from them and even break them for some stone. You can also break the training dummies where you get your first weapon for extra wood. You will always have a random choice between different speed weapons at the beginning: fists, daggers, swords, axes and hammers. Fists only deal good damage on the last hit of a combo, and hammers are very slow, so you’ll need to judge enemy attacks very carefully if you get stuck with those weapons, and look for opportunities to switch them out during a Crusade if you do. . you are not liking it. Certain combat rooms will have banners with small symbols indicating challenge modifiers. Be prepared for adjustments like enemies that have less health but damage against you is doubled, or chests that will drop food instead of gold.

Cult TarotRoom.jpg

Unless you find the Telescope Tarot Card, you may not know what’s coming next in the combat rooms. If you look closely at the exits, you can sometimes tell where the breather is. Tarot card rooms always have stars hanging over the entrance, and the blacksmith has swords hanging over the exit of his room. Hearts come in different varieties: red hearts recharge your health to its current maximum, while blue hearts are “shields” that are essentially one-use extensions. Sick hearts are similar to blue hearts, but they will also damage everyone on the screen when they hit you, so make sure you get tarot cards or crown abilities that give you more! Keep an eye out for rooms with red X marks in them – these are traps that can be triggered when you walk through them. There is a short delay before they activate, so try to lure enemies in so they can do the damage for you. Time still passes on a crusade. You should probably aim to clear a quest in around 8-12 minutes, and make sure your followers are well fed and happy before you leave. If you see notifications of illness, starvation, or death, it’s time to hurry up. That said, there are plenty of materials to grab if you take your time. Each region has its own unique merchandise (flowers, spider silk, mushrooms, glass) that cannot be easily obtained elsewhere, and the environment often hides bodies that can be cut up for bones. Even the merchant rooms often have a lot of free loot that you can get by hacking the place.

Cult Omnipresence.jpg

One of the Crown Skills you can unlock by killing a boss allows you to drop out of the Crusades at any time, which is extremely useful for fixing a big problem with your Followers, or making a tactical retreat to keep most of the resources you have. earned so far. Depending on how well you do, items you find during quests may have bonus (or penalty) amounts. Get through a quest or boss fight without taking damage to get massive bonuses, but fail and you’ll lose half. If you use the crown ability to warp, you will only lose a small amount.

Cult DemonSummoning.jpg

If you’re having trouble progressing in a region, invest in Demon Summoning using Divine Inspiration. This allows you to temporarily turn a Follower into a demon that follows you during a quest to offer defensive or offensive buffs (similar to certain Binding of Isaac allies). Just make sure you let them rest after you get back. Tarot cards are a must to progress through combat areas, and the more you buy and add to your party, the better off you’ll be. The merchant will give you a free Tarot card in each room you find it in, but later in the game you can also pay to draw another card to the side. You can also find them in chests and in random rooms. Sometimes Tarot cards will have a higher rarity level: green will increase the effects a bit, and bright purple versions will increase the effects a great deal. Random rooms are just that: you never know what you’ll find. Get ready for anything: a room full of chests or a surprise mini-boss. Once you defeat the boss of a region, you can still fight again whenever you want. The statues you can steal devotion from early on can be destroyed to reveal a portal to their shrine to challenge them again. The chests you find when crusading can often contain blueprints or follower skins to add to your collection. Some are marked as general, while others are region specific. If you don’t feel like searching for the region-specific ones, be sure to visit the points of interest that certain NPCs mark on your map, as they will include stalls selling blueprints corresponding to a region and a shrine to buy follower skins. that region as well.

Cult Management Tips

Keeping your followers happy, healthy, and well-fed isn’t always as easy as it sounds, so be sure to keep these tips in mind:

When night comes, all your followers will stop whatever they’re doing and go to bed. That doesn’t mean you have to stop what you’re doing. You can still build, mine, or cut things yourself if you need to, just be careful about accidentally hosting an event in your Temple, as your Followers will get mad if you wake them up.

Cult SpiderCatch.jpg

Also at night, the little spiders will run around and may try to run away with the resources left on the ground, but you can chase them down and press A to turn them into tasty morsels to cook later. You can also catch fireflies for a little devotion.

Don’t you want to sit and wait for tomorrow? Hold the Y button at night to meditate and speed up the flow of time. Even your favorite followers will eventually age and die, so try not to get too attached to them. Elder Followers still attend Sermons and Rituals to add their loyalty to your earnings, but they won’t do much more, and you can expect them to crash and die without warning in a few days. However, you can unlock a ritual to bring them back from the dead, whether they want to come back or not. The Ritual of the Resurrection has many excellent uses. It will bring followers who retain their loyalty level, allowing you to keep leveling them up. He can even resurrect the elderly and they’ll come back in good shape, but you never know when old age will strike again. Even Followers that were killed, promoted, or sacrificed can be resurrected regardless of whether you buried them.

Cult FindPoop.jpg

Your followers are prone to a bewildering amount of poop and vomit, and it’s not uncommon to come back from a Crusade to find nasty little gifts everywhere (at least until you get an outhouse and cleaning station). If you’re having trouble finding the culprits in the bushes, enter build mode to improve your visibility and zoom in quickly to find the little yellow dots, then start cleaning up! Speaking of poop, always keep an eye on the disease meter in the top corner. If it’s ever a little below capacity, that usually means someone left you a gift (if someone is seriously ill, you’ll get a bigger notification). Don’t wait to clean up the mess as it can cause a chain reaction of vomiting and illness if allowed to spread.

Cult HelpBuild.jpg

Small shards of Faith go a long way in keeping your Followers happy, especially early on when you don’t have too many options to build up when people start to disagree. Be sure to hold daily Sermons and bless individual Followers, and keep a positive Ritual in reserve when possible. Even building small decorations increases faith a bit, even more so when you go and help with the building process. Unlocking doctrines allows you to choose between benevolent and malevolent traits and rituals. You can mix and match them to suit your playstyle, but it’s helpful to choose doctrines that complement each other. If you want your Followers to respond positively to the sacrifice, you can encourage the Elders to sacrifice as well!

Cult rituals.jpg

As you unlock more doctrines, try to have a good mix of rituals that increase and decrease faith, or at least be prepared to deal with the ramifications of a negative ritual by appealing to the traits of the entire cult that will make them happy again.

Cult BlessFriends.jpg

Take the time to chat with your followers. Giving them daily boons, gifts, and completing quests levels up their loyalty, giving you more devotion, and you can get more benefits by promoting (or sacrificing) them or sending them on quests.

Cult MurderTime.jpg

Sometimes you just have to kill a Follower (if you choose this particular Doctrine). Whether he doesn’t want to deal with his dissension, old age, or just wants to reap some meat, know that other Followers tend to freak out. You can get around this by waiting until nightfall and assigning the target a task away from the others. This can also be done if a follower has died of old age and you wish to harvest their flesh instead of burying them, with no witnesses!

Faithful Cult Follower.jpg

Try giving gifts to Followers that have fringe benefits. Don’t waste faster movement speed on those who work slow, and give additional Devotion Necklaces to those who already generate it well. Give your obedient Follower the Sleepless Necklace and direct them to important tasks like smelting or harvesting. Certain rituals can give great hidden side effects. Once you learn how to brainwash your cult with mushrooms, you will find that they are so devoted that they will have a better than normal chance of completing quests in the Missionary.
