The unmissable fashion of your universe SDCC Fashion Show

Youtube channel.

Fans were able to see a wide range of designs inspired by popular movies and TV shows. Including Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, CW’s 100, Scream, Doctor Strange, Spiderman, a wide range of hits from Disney, some from Studio Ghibli and even a look inspired by the hit band BTS. Each outfit looked amazing and did the inspiration justice. These are just a few of my favorite looks, which didn’t win.

The second outfit to hit the runway was designed by Liz Todd, who goes by @ambrose_cosplay on Instagram. This outfit instantly caught my eye due to the green and gold coloration. It was already a must-have situation because he also gave off that little vintage vibe with the big coat. But when she took off her coat to reveal a vest and well-cut pants, she wanted to swoon. Who knew a design based on Perry from Phineas and Ferb could support such an amazing moment. Especially since the design was titled, “Perry the Platypus?!”

One of the things Her Universe has thrived on is finding a way to represent your favorite fandom, while still looking fashionable. And the designer of this piece perfectly understood that balance. Lauren Wilkinson, @electricseafoam on Instagram, was inspired by the hit Magna and show series, My Hero Academia. While I’ve never seen the show, this design made me second-guess that decision. Especially with the amazing feather sleeves that went well with the color blocking. It makes sense why the name of this design is “Fierce Wings”.

Who doesn’t love the changing room catwalk? Maybe I’m slightly biased because this design is based on one of my favorite movies, The Lizzie McGuire Film. This look titled “What Seams Are Made Of” and designed by Leah Foley (@spinnerscourtdesign) would have stolen hearts simply with the purple outfit. However, including the short change for newbies has us yelling “hey, hey, hey!”

However, this wasn’t the only outfit change I’ve fallen in love with so far. “Down the Rabbit Hole” was designed by Kimberly Burns (@kberry723) and reveals a reversible coat. Plus a colorful 3-piece ensemble that included a long-sleeved shirt that resembled the Cheshire cat’s purple stripes and a plaid print embellished with lace letters and daisies. For me, it was the outfit under the coat that made me smile a huge smile.

Fashion is about being bold and making a statement, but it can also be about the beauty of simplicity. Designer Paige Campbell (@quasar_creations) did a fantastic job with her creation, “From Another Dimension.” Inspired by Into the Spiderverse, this dress is a ballerina chic combination of black and colorful details. Especially if you look at the bottom of her dress where it’s embroidered with neon skyscrapers. Wearing this dress would make anyone feel like a spider queen.

There are so many amazing designs, and these are just a few of our favorites. I guess that’s why we’re not judges. Because in this situation, everyone would be a winner. Check out all the amazing designers, their social media accounts, and the artistic inspiration behind the dresses here.

Winners

Ending the night on a high note, the glitzy co-hosting duo stepped out in a new Captain Marvel-inspired outfit to announce the winners. Cindy Guillermo Heselton took the title of jury winner and was impressed with the latest hit movie, Pixar’s Turning Pink’s Mei. Which included a Tamagotchi-style shoulder bag that learns her Instagram name, sinnanoms.

He called his design “Caged” and explained the reason behind it in his Instagram post. “To be contained by expectation and get out of that ‘cage.’ Hold back and face the fear of disappointment.” And what is fashion for, if not to use a creative medium to express our truest and deepest selves?

The second winner was designer Michael Burson (@thewizardtailor), who took home the title of Audience Winner. There was stiff competition for coats and capes this season, but this Doctor Strange-inspired design left the crowd spellbound. And it’s not just the cape that will leave you mesmerized. The slanted, button-up pleated jacket is beautifully executed.

Both designers did an amazing job and deserve all the praise they are getting. Plus the fans, including myself, can’t wait to see what comes to their creative minds next year for the launch of Marvel’s Universe, The Marvels.

Big night, big news

While the Her Universe fashion show is a competition, it’s also an opportunity for the designer behind Her Universe to show off their new collections. This year, fans got a glimpse of new lines inspired by Outlander, Marvel, and Star Wars. For fans of Her Universe and the mastermind behind the brand, Ashley Eckstein, the Star Wars line included a special Ahsoka Tano-inspired jean jacket. While Jacked has yet to be released, some of the other items are now available for purchase through Her Universe and Hot Topic.

But one of the biggest announcements was the fact that Her Universe and Hot Topic are taking over the world, starting with Japan. For the first time, starting August 10, fans will be able to enjoy a global collective collection of Studio Ghibli Harajuku in Japan. But don’t worry, these collections will also be available on the same day in Canada and the United States. This is great because after seeing some of the pieces, I MUST grab Kiki’s delivery inspired dress.

fashion never stops

As San Diego Comedian-Con wraps up and Her Universe Vogue Show winners begin work on their grand prize, it’s important to remember one thing. The love of fashion and the need to symbolize your favorite fandoms should not be put on hold until next year. Scorching Theme with the help of Her Universe has catapulted the nerd/pop culture craze to levels we’ve never seen before and there’s still a lot of room for growth. New varieties are constantly appearing, for example, the collective collection Studio Ghilbi Harajuku that is coming up on August 10th. And it’s not just about these big manufacturers.

Designers, as we saw in the fashion show, are always creating new things for their stores and/or custom commissions. So if there is something you really appreciated or a designer who spoke to you. Be sure to follow along and help them as they go about fulfilling their passions.
