The pre-loved fashion trends to expect this season

From 2005 twee to urban explorer, these are the pre-owned styles to watch out for.

About three years ago, I decided to ditch fast fashion in favor of conscious wardrobe choices. I went big thrift shopping (still true today) and curated my own secondhand capsule wardrobe. But as a chronically online girl, I struggled to resist the abundance of microtrends that suddenly flooded my For You page.

It was platforms like Depop and consignment stores like Goodbyes that taught me that circular fashion didn’t have to be boring. There are ways you can consciously engage with ‘trends’, adjusting your wardrobe seasonally to include new textures, shapes and color palettes. Plus, who knows what’s really hot?

As Agustina Panzoni, Depop’s Category and Trend Manager, tells me, “Everything is happening, everything is trending, everything is in free fall. We are entering the flex dressing season”. And it’s true, there really are no rules. But if you’re looking for a second-hand gem for summer, Agustina and Lachlan Sully, the assistant manager at Goodbyes Brunswick, have compiled a list of earth-friendly trends to watch out for.

Layers upon layers upon layers upon layers

Use everything you have at once. A fitted cropped jacket over a longer T-shirt over an A-line skirt over a pair of baggy jeans with a hat, sunglasses, and scarf. Or an oversized hoodie over a dress over a pair of wide-leg shorts over a pair of Adidas sweatpants… you get the idea.

Feel free to mix and match contrasting fabrics, textures, and prints; How you dress is one of the easiest ways to express your individuality. Wearing tons of layers is also great as the weather warms up, you can always take a few off to reveal what’s underneath.

2005 corny

Unironic Pretty is back. This time, however, it’s less Alannah Hill or Zooey Deschanel and more Marissa Cooper attends high school at Chanel. Feel your women’s fantasy with tweed jackets, ballerinas, devoré velvet skirt suits with lace trim, lace on anything, floral prints, satin ribbons, rosettes, Keds, polka dots and ruffle capes. Look out for Anna Molinari, Alberta Ferretti, Rodarte, Sonia Rykiel, Valentino, Jill Stuart, Blumarine, Miu Miu, etc.

Use a suit

As RuPaul says in his Masterclass, “Wear a suit.” Well, he says, “Wear a suit if you want to make more money,” but why not just wear one for fun? Having a suit that fits you well is also not that important. It should be too big and disheveled, with a baggy (unironed) shirt and a sloppy tie. It’s about how it feels to wear a suit; to almost cosplay as an ‘adult’ being an adult.

eurotrash

Why not dress like you’re strolling around Mykonos or Marseille? Form-fitting polo shirts, distressed low-rise jeans, big shiny belt buckles, a pair of thongs, mountains of jewelry on each limb, and a well-worn baseball cap—why not? Wraparound sunglasses are a must, as is a giant designer bag. Maybe even a bikini visible under all of this. Who cares? You’re on vacation! Well, something like that. Look out for Dsquared2, Pucci, True Religion, Armani Exchange, the old Dolce and Gabbana, Iceberg, Missoni and Diesel.

Accessories

The scale of our accessories is evolving. Sunglasses are suddenly gigantic and wrap around our entire head. The scarves are super skinny and long with fringes or beads and are worn all year long. The bags are huge and practical for a change. Take with you everything you might need for the day and night, maybe even the next day. For footwear, think chunky but modern…like boat shoes with a chunky sole, square-toed loafers on a clown-like scale, or a pair of bulky sandals or straps that will make your (possibly gigantic) feet ) look small.
