The best winter sportswear for women

Living in New York during the winter can be magical, but not when it’s time to go for a run in the morning. Over the past few months, I’ve ditched my Planet Fitness membership and started incorporating a daily outdoor run into my morning routine. However, one of the biggest impediments to outdoor exercise for me during the winter has always been the unbearable cold. For years, my workout clothes have only consisted of cheap leggings, a sports bra, and a T-shirt—all items ill-equipped for running in the cold. That’s why I set out to find the best sportswear for winter.

Whether you’re running outdoors, hiking, or skiing, it’s essential to have sportswear that won’t make you shiver or stifle during your workout. The best activewear for cold temperatures insulates you while allowing your body to breathe and keeping sweat out. Different workouts call for a variety of clothing, so I tried dozens of different pieces that fit a variety of activities. From fleeces to running tights, I’ve compiled a list of the best winter sportswear on the market.

Brooks recently launched its Run Visible collection, which features thermals, athletic and spandex garments that have reflective features, making them the optimal clothing for working out in the dark. Winter means darkness comes early, so anyone planning to exercise outside should have reflective gear. The thermal hoodie allows runners to be insulated while feeling comfortable knowing that all cars and passers-by will be able to see them.

Get the thermal sweatshirt soon because from now until November 28, all Activewear on the Brooks website is 30% off.

the north face

Although I have no personal experience with the North Face Thermal Long Sleeve Top, my cousin (a ski instructor in Vermont) swears by it. The long sleeves fit comfortably under outer clothing and are designed to keep you warm and dry in even the snowiest of conditions.

When I first tried the Delta Tights, I was skeptical. The material felt good quality, but the insulating padding on the top and bottom felt weird. However, once I put the leggings to work while hiking in 30 degree weather, I understood why people spend $100 on them. Throughout the hike my legs never got cold. The tights are waterproof, breathable, and made for fall and winter temperatures. Although the fit may seem strange at first with the insulating pads, the Delta Tights are definitely worth it.

lululemon

Before I had these leggings, I never understood the hype of Lululemon. I just assumed they were average quality leggings sold at a ridiculous price. I am happy to admit that I was wrong.

The Lululemon Wunder Train Leggings are everything and more. Although the slogan for these leggings is “Train Hard, Not Hot”, the leggings keep your legs warm and prevent excessive sweating that would interfere with your training. For the past two weeks I’ve been wearing them while running in the morning and during my Orange Theory night classes, and I’ll never go back. I wouldn’t recommend the tights for extreme cold, but if you’re looking for a pair of tights that you can wear to a quick run or training class, then these are perfect for you.

bandit running

When I first tried the Bandit Cold Weather Running Tights, I doubted they would keep me warm. To my surprise, the stockings were up to the task. Running in the mornings in the Bandit Tights in sub-zero weather, my legs didn’t freeze once. The cozy and sweat-absorbent interior allows for a comfortable workout.

If a $900 Canada Goose is beyond your budget, then the Oros Orion Parka is the next best thing. The fully insulated, waterproof parka features four exterior zip pockets, two interior pockets and a comfort collar. Anyone who needs a parka for winter sports will be more than satisfied with the Orion Parka.

outdoor voices

The perfect lightweight fleece doesn’t exist; until now. The Outdoor Voices RecFleece Snap Jacket makes those cold winter hikes a little more bearable. Ideal for long hikes or fast runs, the RecFleece is made from breathable polyester and fleece. On colder mornings, I recommend pairing this fleece with a thermal top and puffer jacket and then call it a day.

lululemon

Lululemon’s Evergreen Anorak fits comfortably over larger layers and provides premium wind protection. The water-repellent windbreaker features a kangaroo pocket with a concealed phone pouch, packable hood and a cinched waist. My favorite aspect of the jacket is its length. Windbreakers often wrap around my entire body or cut into my waist; the Evergreen Anorak is cut just above the butt, providing the ideal amount of coverage.

lululemon

Lululemon’s Define Jacket Luon contours perfectly to your body, not only making you look good but also allowing you to feel comfortable while working out. The jacket is quick-drying and features a mesh that allows for increased airflow. My favorite aspect of the jacket is the thumbholes on the sleeves that allow you to keep your hands warm while you work out. Overall, I would recommend this jacket for outdoor runs or hikes. However, if you are walking, you should consider adding an extra layer.

fables

If a vest is more your style, look no further than the Fabletics Elliot Quilted Vest. The padded vest is lightweight and packable, making it ideal for athletes on the go. The vest includes two front pockets, as well as a collar intended to help insulate the neck. Although extra layers will be needed to make working out in the winter a more enjoyable experience, the vest is a nice addition to every workout setting.
