The 10 Worst Fashion Trends of 2022 May Go Straight to the Trash

At its best, fashion is subjective, and anything goes. It can be argued that in 2022, people were doing their own thing more than ever.

Still, some of the most compelling fashion critics are featured on the worst dressed list, a franchise coined by critic Richard Blackwell. There is value in curating a “worst dressed list,” not for ridicule, but as a barometer of our time, and to gauge what works for us (and what doesn’t) when it comes to pop culture.

It should be noted that Blackwell also published a list of “Fabulous Fashion Independents” which was frequently supplemented by those he considered “worst dressed”. Some would say that she’s not considered really cool until you’ve made the worst dressed list.

In this spirit, HuffPost selected the 10 Worst Fashion Trends of 2022 and we turned to stylists to explain why these looks just didn’t work for us.

Meet the critics

chelsea volpe is a Manhattan-based still life and fashion stylist known for her idiosyncratic combination of colors and vibrant imagery. Her clients include Bloomingdale’s, Estée Lauder, Highsnobiety, Hypebeast, Paper Magazine, Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily.

1. Sunglasses at night

“The number of 20-somethings I’ve seen hanging around the New York night scene wearing ultra-fancy sunglasses is staggering,” Volpe told HuffPost. “Is the dark not dark enough for you? It’s not classy, or downright practical, to wear a pair of Balenciaga sunglasses at your local Bushwick nightclub, darlings.”

2. Y2K aesthetics

Osemwenkhae is not a fan of sparkles, hearts or butterflies when it comes to dressing. “There are some things that should stay from the early 2000s, like the Y2K aesthetic. Yeah, there’s a cool factor in that this trend comes from millennial pop culture, but there’s nothing flattering about dressing like a Bratz doll unless you’re under 21.”

3. Floral Dresses to Coastal Grandma

The coastal granny look had its moment this summer, but Volpe found the barrage of floral prints completely basic, and not in a good way. “Using your grandmother’s bathroom wallpaper as a dress is so outdated. Let’s swap out the archaic Nantucket floral print for something more interesting, shall we? She suggests going for solids instead.

4. Low-rise jeans

Low-rise jeans are back this year, but why? “Low-rise jeans highlight the wrong parts of your body,” Osemwenkhae noted. She argued that showing butt cleavage or a cheeky thong is not empowering. Of course, style is subjective, and so are the feelings of empowerment associated with it. she had shock value associated with it. Twenty years later, showing off your thong trend feels a bit empty, statement-wise.

5. Cargo pants

Another trouser misstep that made waves in 2022 was the dominance of cargo pants, which project, in Volpe’s opinion, a shapeless-looking silhouette. “Wearing cargo pants the size of a parachute is not cute. When your pants look like two garbage bags fused together in a tragic nightmare, it’s trouble.”

6. Platform flip flops

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the rise of platforms in footwear – the style has been around since the 1970s. In the 1990s we saw platforms in everything from Mary Janes to sneakers – but the most offensive , according to Osemwenkhae, are platform flip-flops, making a comeback in 2022. She told HuffPost that she found the trend “a bit bulky and heavy on the foot,” adding that when designing beachwear this winter, go for something more Elegant.

7. Brands that are not responsible

Conscious consumerism has been a mainstay of Gen Z, quick to use purchase options to let brands know when they’re doing something disgusting or, worse, offensive and inhumane. “Running a walking billboard for anti-Semitism is not cutting-edge, my loves. Tsk, tsk, Adidas for being complacent about the Kanye fiasco.” Here, Volpe references the outrage people felt over why it took Adidas so long to break ties with Kanye West, following a barrage of hate speech and anti-Semitic comments. He added that “major brands must take responsibility.” This December, Balenciaga launched two campaigns that sparked allegations that the brand condoned child exploitation. TikTokers reacted by destroying Balenciaga products in their feed.

8. Micro Mini Skirts

How short is too short when it comes to minis? For Osemwenkhae, it’s all about portability. “There is a limit point where it is so small that it is not practical to use it.” She said that she’s ready to retire the mini and bring back the midi skirts instead.

9. Lingerie as nightwear

After two years of wearing loungewear during lockdown, Volpe noted, “it’s so easy to throw on a sexy corset or a skintight robe for a night out.” But according to her, lingerie belongs in the bedroom and nightwear needs to have a little more substance in 2023.

10. Skinny jeans

Painted pants are out of fashion. Osemwenkhae noted that it’s time to swap out your skinny jeans for a pair of “relaxed straight jean.” It’s a style that’s easy to wear and really flatters the body.” He added that this fit is “proportionately attractive, especially for a pear shape.”
