Sudbury News: Former hockey player makes an impact on the fashion world

A local hockey player turned fashion designer showed off one of his jackets on the main stage of hockey in Canada last weekend.

Designer Cameron Lizotte grew up in Sudbury and played for the OHL before turning to fashion design.

Last weekend, broadcaster Ron MacLean wore one of Lizotte’s creations during the ‘Hockey Canada Day’ broadcast from Owen Sound.

Lizotte described it as a “full circle moment”.

“I am very honored to continue to make an impact in hockey,” he said.

“It’s great that the hockey world is still wondering what I’m doing and it feels great that the support is there. I can only hope that I can make hockey more fashionable’

In 2016, Lizotte started her own brand called Atelier Coin, based in Victoria, BC. Since then, he has been internationally recognized for his designs.

She had a show featured at Paris Fashion Week 2022, as part of a collection for emerging brands.

“It was an incredible moment,” Lizotte said.

“It felt like a hockey game with the blood flowing and right after I showed that same collection in Vancouver a month later. And then I won British Columbia’s Best Emerging Designer Award.”

Now that she’s had a taste of the world stage, she said her next goal is to continue building her brand in Canada and beyond.

He said it’s important to remember where he comes from and where he is inspired by his upbringing.

“Sudbury will always give me the inspiration I need because that’s where the name comes from,” Lizotte said.

“I named my brand after the city.”

The next step for Lizotte is her first independent show in Paris in March. And she said she hopes to look at Toronto for a location for a physical store in the coming months.
