Starbucks worker says store now accepts credit/debit card tips

Earlier in the year, Starbucks announced that it would implement a tipping system for credit and debit cards by the end of 2022.

Now, it looks like the launch is underway and Starbucks workers are sharing their reactions to the viral success.

In an example with over 322,000 views, TikToker Mari (@puropinchepartymari) jokes about how much her customer service has improved since the store can more easily accept tips.

“Me providing literally the best customer service anyone has ever experienced because we now take tips via debit/credit,” she wrote in caption over the video.

In the caption, he offered examples of things he could say to improve the advice, such as “OMG, I love your earrings” and “Are you going to have your usual shaken espresso with seven stevias and seven sugar free vanilla bombs with almond milk?” IN A VENTI CUP WITH EXTRA FOAM WITHOUT ICE!??”

While the video is a joke, it sparked a debate about tipping at Starbucks in general.

Some were in favor of the measure.

“HOLD ON, HELL YEAH,” one user wrote of discovering the card tips. “I would always tip them if I could, but I rarely have any cash with me.”

“Girl I’m so happy about this,” repeated another. “I want to tip all the time, but I don’t always have cash with me!”

“About time!! Every time I go I tell the baristas that they need it because sometimes I don’t have cash,” agreed a third.

In the comments section, Mari explained that while cash tips are better, she’s excited about the prospect of card-based tips, as “most people pay by card, so this is going to boost our tips”.

However, other users said that Starbucks was already expensive enough, or that the increase in tips will be used against wage increases for workers.

“I’m already broke on my $6 latte,” said one commenter.

“I pay almost $8 for my chai latte, sorry I can’t,” a second added.

“Now they will never give you that raise,” another TikToker speculated.

“Probably because they can tax your tips now, best friend,” an additional TikToker offered.

The Daily Dot contacted Starbucks and Mari via email.
