BeReal is a photo-only platform founded in 2020, but its popularity skyrocketed earlier this year. Users receive a daily notification at a random part of the day advising them that they have two minutes to post a photo of themselves and their surroundings, with the intention of generating more authentic content than is often shared on other social media platforms. social networks like Instagram. Draymond Green, Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Jonathan Kuminga and former NBA star Manu Ginobili are among the players featured in photos shared by the NBA on BeReal so far.

“There is a young demographic on the platform and it is dating viewing. The app appeals to users who are looking for a more authentic social media presence and are highly engaged with the content,” Ashley Atwell, senior director of social content for the NBA, wrote in an email to SportTechie.

BeReal recently hit a pre-money valuation of $600 million, according to The Information, and its investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Accel and DST Global. The app is “disrupting” the NBA’s social media strategy, as both Instagram and TikTok recently added similar features that invite users to share content within short windows.

“It’s a completely unique platform that only allows you to post once a day. That posting time is spent by BeReal’s push notification and only your friends can see the content,” Atwell wrote. “We have seen platforms like Instagram and Snapchat replicate the functionality of the camera, and more recently TikTok developed TikTok Now, which features similar capabilities. BeReal’s authentic nature display and quote is unique and has disrupted the social media strategy.”
