Snapshots of popular fashion throughout the decades.

This week, Nostalgia looks at some popular fashion choices over the decades in Cumbria and how they align with popular styles across the country.

In the 1950s, although World War II had ended in 1945, money and materials were still in short supply. However, many British women took fashion very seriously. The predominant silhouette in the 1950s had a tiny waist, a fitted half top, and a full skirt to just below the knee.

For young girls in the early 1960s, clothing was typically plain, simple dresses. However, in the late 1960s, clothing became more inspired by city life. This meant that bright colors and patterns became popular. Short “Mini” skirts and crop tops were introduced for the first time.

The early 1960s also didn’t see much of a change in youth fashion. Clothing was very plain, with gray being a common color.

The fashion of the 70s was inspired by the hippy movement with much more eccentric designs and the replica of Vivienne Westwood in the form of punk.

In the fashion of the 1980s, new clothing such as the power suit became popular. Tracksuits and sportswear, with different brands of sneakers, were seen more frequently. Denim skirts and jean jackets, as well as jeans, became more popular and the boy band ‘Bros’ popularized ripped jeans.

1990s fashion was a bit more minimalist than 1980s fashion. The popularity of grunge and alternative rock music amplified the grunge look into the mainstream in 1994. The anti-conformist approach to fashion led to t-shirts, jeans , hoodies, and sneakers became more popular.

The fashion of the 2000s included a fusion of vintage styles, global and ethnic clothing such as a ‘boho’, and fashion based on popular music. Hip-hop fashion and independent music were popular. Y2K fashion emerged with baggier bottoms and smaller tops, buckles, metallics, and graphic tees were common. These trends continued into the 2010s.

In 2022, there has been a combination of trends that have become popular. 90’s and Y2K fashion is popular with baggier jeans being seen again as well as 70’s and 80’s clothing being brought back to life.
