Sheriff to criminals: change your lifestyle

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY)-Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza announced a dent in Dothan crime Thursday with his stern look perhaps a predictor of things to come.

He announced this week’s seizure of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, Xanax, various firearms and $16,000 in cash at a Chinook Street home.

Willie Gilmore II and Robert Bailey, who live there, face various charges.

This is the latest police operation in a zealous effort to curb the violence that has shocked Dothan.

Four died from gunshots during November and others were injured.

“I know a lot of people are afraid to go out (shopping) or eat,” Valenza said.

But he sees that the tide is turning.

He applauds his deputies for their dedication and praises Dothan’s police cooperation in the joint effort to quell crime.

Valenza, a 46-year-old police officer, suspects he knows what is driving the recent violence that has almost exclusively been committed by hot-headed teens and young adults.

“I think a lot of it is this home life that some of them are living and they get infatuated with (violent-themed) video games, and also get addicted to (online gang type) videos,” he said.

Valenza advocates for public participation in reporting incidents that could help officers and has a tough message for lawbreakers.

“Change your lifestyle before we get our hands on you,” Valenza warned.
