Rosie Eccles goes one better. . . Winning Commonwealth Games gold emphatically

BIRMINGHAM – Remarks from gold medalist Rosie ECCLES (WAL) after beating Kaye Frances SCOTT (AUS) in the women’s light middleweight final at The NEC on Sunday.

Rosie ECCLES (WAL) – gold

On winning the gold:
“I’ve had some bad decisions against me in the past, so I didn’t want to leave this one up to the judges.

“Once I found out that my power was landing, I thought, ‘Let’s go.’ He was ready for this. It had to be now. I couldn’t live with myself without securing that gold medal.

“Listening to that anthem made the struggles, all the effort, worthwhile.”

On winning gold after taking silver at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games:
“It means everything. I have trained and worked very hard. I’ll always be an optimist, but even I was starting to think, ‘Am I cursed or something?’ I can’t believe he actually did it.

“Yesterday I wasn’t quite into it. But today I was right. I was mentally disciplined, but this is not just my medal. This is the medal of so many people who have helped me on my way”.

About their celebrations:
“I have slept about eight hours in the last four nights, but I am so excited that I still feel like big celebrations.

“My whole family is here. The only person who is not here, who should have been, is my head coach, Doug Lewis, who is 80 years old. He’s back home, but I managed to Facetime him before the fight.

“He has done wonders for me and this medal is for him.”
