return it was the first game developed by Housemarque that was not a shoot’em up, and was met with extremely positive reception from both gamers and critics. Housemarque has already said that his next game will not be return 2instead of opting for a new IP. However, this doesn’t mean that Returnal 2 will never happen, as the game is a possibility after the next title is over.
Could Returnal 2 ever happen?
The next Housemarque game will not be Returnal 2. The unannounced game is a new IP created for PlayStation. However, this doesn’t mean there will never be a Returnal sequel. Housemarque Senior Narrative Designer Eevi Korhonen told VGC “if we go back to Selene’s story after [the new game] remains to be seen”, but at the moment “I can’t comment much on that”.
Returnal was an ambitious game that left a lot of ideas on the cutting room floor. Housemarque’s new game was in the early stages of development back in March, and there was talk of the game still being in the concept stage. It doesn’t seem too far-fetched, then, that Korhonen said the team might be considering reusing some of Returnal’s scrapped ideas after they had to leave a lot behind:
The return was very ambitious. We dreamed super big, but we still had a lot to leave on the cutting room floor. All these ideas and narrative systems. I’m very excited to pick up those pieces and see how they fit into our new IP story.
We didn’t know exactly how big [Returnal] it was going to be, building for a new platform on a new engine with a new team, all of those things take some learning. Now we have that team that went through the fire and learned how to build a game like Returnal. So now we can start stronger.
