Rangers duo praised by Rio Ferdinand for impact against Liverpool

Rangers suffered their third successive Champions League defeat on Tuesday night, with Liverpool inflicting a 2-0 loss at Anfield.

Rio Ferdinand believes Rangers would have fared better against Jurgen Klopp’s side if Fashion Sakala and Rabbi Matondo had started the game.

Both wingers came on as second-half substitutes, with Sakala replacing Malik Tillman just after the hour mark, and Matondo replacing Ryan Kent with nine minutes remaining.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match (Oct 4, 02:02:00), Ferdinand said: “To be fair, the two wingers who came in late in the game (Sakala and Matondo), wanted to reach the people.

“They showed a different energy in the game, and you thought if maybe they started like that…

Hindsight is a great thing, but if maybe they started out that way or were a little more adventurous or got ahead of themselves with those types of players, they may have given themselves a better chance.

“Maybe I wouldn’t have allowed Liverpool to be as far ahead as they were.”

Facing Liverpool at Anfield was always going to be a difficult task, but there are a number of decisions made by Giovanni van Bronckhorst that can be called into question.

Ferdinand is right to point to the Rangers wingers. Kent endured a horrible night and potentially should have come out earlier, while Matondo and Sakala offered much more in their limited cameos.

Van Bronckhorst was also wrong at first. Antonio Colak is in superb form and deserved to start the game. If he insisted on playing with only one striker, he had to be the Croatian.

Rangers were always going to be feeding on scraps against the Liverpool defence, and Colak has shown a superb ability to seize small chances and turn them into goals.

In contrast, Alfredo Morelos looked lost at times and struggled throughout to worry even the Liverpool backline. Van Bronckhorst eventually made the switch, but today he will regret his pick choices.

Hopefully the lessons of Tuesday (Oct 4) have been learned and will be applied when Liverpool visit Ibrox next Wednesday (Oct 12).
