As Queer Eye’s resident style expert, it’s no surprise that Tan France becomes a fashion consultant while on vacation.
“I get asked about gifts every year,” the Was Him designer, 39, tells The Hollywood Reporter. Naturally, we had to pick the brains of France for more expert-approved ideas for even the hardest-to-buy-for recipients. The stylish Emmy-winning member of the Fab Five (and bonafide Lego icon) sat down with THR to answer our burning questions about gifting, from whether gift cards can be done right to the best present he’s received recently.
Thoughts on gift cards: yes or no?
You know, if it’s based on fashion, [a gift card] It’s really what I recommend. Many will disagree and many will say that it is impersonal. Let’s say, for example, that his favorite store was J. Crew. Even if it was a good friend or family member, I don’t always like exactly what you like about there. But if I know you really like a particular store, I’d get it as a gift card. I know you well enough to understand that, but I want you to have the freedom to choose what you get. Or you could end up coming back. I want you to love what you get. I think it’s the most respectful way to make gift cards.
I know a lot of people ask for experiences instead of tangible gifts. Would you rather do that during the holidays?
Here’s the thing: In my opinion, even my husband, who I’ve been with for 14 and a half years, I don’t know exactly what he’s going to like. I think experiences are great in certain situations. When it comes to the holidays, I like a gift. I want something to unwrap, and that’s what everyone expects.
They are other experiences, a birthday, Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, I don’t like gifts at those points. I don’t need my husband to buy me anything. Take me somewhere: Let’s go for brunch at my favorite restaurant or to a theme park. But when it comes to the holidays, it’s not necessarily because I love Christmas a lot, I love stockings, it’s a very fun holiday and there’s something special about opening a present.
How is your Christmas season this year?
I consider Thanksgiving through New Years the holidays. For Thanksgiving, I cooked everything for everyone! I’ve been doing that for 13 years for everyone, so we’ll have a feast. Usually there are 7 or 8 of us, or 12 or 13. Then we do basically the same thing on New Years, but I just change the baked items.
We hear that your Christmas decorations are put together well before December.
I am very Muslim, but every year we slightly change the colors of the Christmas tree. Last year it was red and gold, the year before it was turquoise.
You recently became a father! Are you and your husband celebrating the holidays differently now that you have your son?
Not yet because he is very young. He’ll be a year and a half, so he won’t really know. We read to him every night. When people think of what they can get for it, we always say a book. He loves a good book.
What is your favorite book at the moment?
This is so obvious, but it’s Goodnight Moon. He scratches it; She loves to “catch” mice!

We love everything you’ve selected for your Klarna gift guide. What do you hope to develop this year?
Actually, in my Klarna gift guide there is one thing that is really there for me. I included it on purpose. I always buy myself a gift, I like things! Mine is this Balenciaga bag. If it wasn’t that, it would be a different bag, like a Jacquemus bag. I have very fidgety hands so I already need to hold things!
What about tech gifts? Do you have an infallible resource?
My family is very technological, but I can hardly understand how to use my laptop. My security system is one of those little consoles, the Nintendo Switch. I have no idea what it is or how it works, I just know that kids are obsessed with them.

Let’s talk festive fashion! What are your style recommendations? Are sequins and sparkles over the top for parties?
This may surprise you, but I really enjoy the tradition of sparkles. Do! I say lean in, during the holidays you don’t want to be that curmudgeon who says, “I’m going to wear a T-shirt and jeans.” Everyone knows what it is: it’s campy, it’s playful, it’s meant to be a joke. Wear that velvet, wear that lurex. Use those sparkles. Add him!
Is that the approach you take with fashion?
I rarely am [except] when i’m on tv or i’m on a rug. Actually, I’m pretty simple in my normal life. I am a regular Christmas sweater wearer.
Speaking of fashion, we love your luxury gift picks. For those who don’t have the budget to gift Gucci, do you have recommendations for fashion items or accessories?
When it comes to fashion accessories, I always like a jewelry moment for a friend. You don’t need to go big with a bag or shoes. If you can and you know them well, but want to keep it simple, dainty and unexpected for a friend, I think jewelry makes a lovely gift. it can be disguise [jewelry], something not expensive and unique. For example, this ring [I’m wearing] It’s $15, I found it at a street vendor in New York.
What has been the best gift you have received lately?
Easy, Antoni Porowski gave me possibly the most thoughtful gift. It was a necklace for when my son was born. It had his initials and the day he was born engraved on it, and I wear it very often and in almost all public appearances.
