Notre Dame beats Clemson Tigers in dominant fashion

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – On a cool and windy night in South Bend, Clemson could never hold anything offensively, while Notre Dame was able to impose its will, dominating the Tigers in all three phases and winning 35-14.

It was the first loss for No. 4 Clemson (8-1) since losing to Pitt last October, snapping the nation’s longest winning streak at 14 games.

The Irish (6-3) were able to control the Tigers’ offense, holding Clemson to just 281 total yards on the night. It wasn’t until well into the third quarter that the Tigers passed the 100-yard mark.

Starting QB DJ Uiagalelei finished the night 27-of-39 for 191 yards, with many of his throws behind the line of scrimmage. He threw an interception, which was returned 96 yards for a touchdown. Uiagalelei was also looted four times during the night.

The offense was so ineffective that late in the third quarter Cade Klubnik was inserted back into the lineup, but this time with different results, as the rookie threw a poor interception from deep in his own end zone, setting up the Irish in the Tigers. ‘ 6-yard line. The Irish would score a few plays later and the Uiagalelei would come on again on the next play.

Even Clemson’s defense couldn’t rescue the Tigers, as Notre Dame won the battle at scrimmage all night, racking up 263 rushing yards on the night. Logan Diggs and Audric Estime passed the 100-yard mark, as the Irishwoman averaged close to 6 YPC on the night.

game player: Notre Dame’s freshman corner Benjamin Morrison took out both Klubnik and Uiagalelei in the win. His first pick came late in the third quarter, setting up the Irish first and goal from the 6th. His second was returned 96 yards to put the Irish within three touchdowns.

key game: On his second play of the night, Klubnik came out of the pocket due to the pressure and threw a mistimed back-footed pass into his own end zone, which was intercepted by Morrison at the Tigers 5-yard line. Three plays later, Audric Estime spiked from 2 yards, putting the Tigers in an impassable hole, down 21-0.
