North Country School Warns of Viral ‘One Chip Challenge’ After Students Fall Sick

CHAUMONT, N.Y. (WWNY) – A northern school is warning parents about a social media challenge. This called, the “Challenge of a chip”.

It’s hot to the taste, to the touch, and it’s hot online. Videos of people eating the chip have gone viral on sites like TikTok.

“Today’s kids are definitely going with the trend. Whatever is happening on Facebook, TikTok. “It’s very scary that these kids are being influenced so quickly,” said William Lipczynski, Chief of the Chaumont Volunteer Fire Department.

It’s why the Chaumont Fire Department reposted a message sent to parents at Lyme Central School by Superintendent Cammy Morrison.

The message, sent on Wednesday, said the chip caused multiple problems for students at the school, including vomiting, increased blood pressure and increased heart rate.

In the worst cases, it can cause esophageal damage or even a heart attack.

What makes it so dangerous? Ingredients include the Carolina Reaper pepper, which is considered the hottest pepper in the world. It also includes the same ingredients used in the bear and pepper spray.

The chip inside the box can be found at various 7/11 locations in the area, including the one in Chaumont. In his message to the parents, Morrison wrote that he had spoken with the store manager. When we spoke to the store manager on Friday, he said he couldn’t comment and recommended that we contact the company.

Despite the warnings on the screen and on the box, anyone of any age can buy the chip.

Another reason Lipczynski said he and other first responders should be vigilant.

“It’s something that we and the rest of the first responders will definitely talk about,” he said.

We contacted 7/11 corporate and Morrison but received no response.
