No job losses as well-known sports retailer to close Blackpool store

Life Style Sports has announced the closure of a second store in Cork

One of the leading sporting goods and fashion retailers in Ireland, the sportswear store has posted a closing sale at its north side location.

The Blackpool Retail Park store put up signs marking the closure, sharing this message with their customers:

“We will miss you. This store is closing. But don’t worry, you can visit us near the Capitol or shop online.”

Currently all lines are 20% off in an “everything must go” sale.

Speaking to The Echo, Life Style Sports store manager in Blackpool, Hazel O’Shea, said staff were informed about the closure about a week ago.

Ms O’Shea, who has been working at the store since November but has been with the company for several years, said the news was not a huge surprise.

“It’s a very quiet store, it’s just the location,” he said.

Approximately six staff currently work at the Blackpool store, all of whom have been offered transfers.

“We’ve all been offered our transfers… so no one is really out of a job.

“There’s the Patrick Street store and then there’s Mahon and Wilton, so there are plenty of stores where all the staff can go,” said Ms O’Shea.

The Blackpool store is expected to close in the coming weeks.

This is the second Cork-wide closure of the retailer in recent memory, as the Ballincollig location was unable to reopen following the Covid lockdowns.

In 2017, the chain opened its newest and most innovative store in The Capitol Building on Patrick’s Street.

Speaking at the flagship store opening in 2017, representatives for the brand said: “Located in the heart of Cork City, our new state-of-the-art store is the largest Life Style Sports location to date. At 20,000 square feet, the new store will be Cork’s largest sportswear retailer and is positioned to be one of the most innovative sports retail experiences in Europe.”

Blackpool Retail Park will also lose another major store in the coming months. Argos confirmed on Thursday morning that it will close all of its Irish stores.
