NHL Awards 2022: Auston Matthews stays ‘casual’ in an open Gucci shirt

TAMPA, Fla. — Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews is one of the most forward-thinking athletes in sports and certainly hockey. At Tuesday night’s NHL Awards, Matthews said he kept his look “casual” to him, which for him still meant wearing Gucci.

Matthews won the Hart Trophy as the NHL Most Valuable Player, an award voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, and the Ted Lindsay Award for Most Outstanding Player, voted on by the NHL Players Association.

He accepted the awards without a tie and with his shirt open.

“They said we could go a little casual. I don’t like to wear a tie, to be honest. It’s hot,” Matthews said, pointing to the Florida weather.

“Trying to take it a little casual tonight,” he added. “Let the chest breathe a bit. It’s sticky out there.”

Matthews wore Gucci from head to toe, although he received a question from the confused Canadian media about his jacket.

Were those maple leaves?

“They’re just little bees,” Matthews said of the Gucci brand.

For Matthews, he looked good on a night where he won two awards.

“It’s nice. I’m not going to lie to you, it feels great. It’s special to have my family here with me. There are a lot of great players in that room,” he said.
