New York Mayor Eric Adams stands with the Fashion Week crowd

Now you can call him runway mayor.

Mayor Eric Adams has garnered attention for his regular late-night crawling activities, making him a fixture in Zero Bond and leading him to refer to himself as the “Mayor of Nightlife”.

But Adams is joining another glamorous industry: the world of fashion.

Last Thursday night, Adams welcomed the city’s fashion establishment to Gracie Mansion to kick off New York Fashion Week with an evening co-hosted by Anna Wintour and CFDA Director Steven Kolb. Attendees included Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg, Wes Gordon and Tory Burch.

“You are the exclamation point of New York. They say if you look good you feel good, so we know we feel good tonight, because you all look great,” he told the well-heeled crowd according to WWD. He also praised Wintour, calling her the “angel who wears Prada.”

Adams is known as much for his love of the red carpet as he is for his swaggy style. He prefers impeccably tailored suits, patterned blazers and diamond earrings. In February, he attended shows for Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors along with Wintour, which may have helped land him a coveted invitation to the Met Gala, an event he “has been dying to go to for years,” a friend told The Post. Last spring.

During his speech, he defended his late-night hours and extravagant style and touted the fashion industry’s financial contribution to the city.

“People thought this town was a 9 to 5 town. It was just a flannel suit town. And suddenly January 2022 comes along and the mayor walks in and says he’s the mayor of nightlife,” he said.

He added: “New York is back. We are alive. We are going to bring that artistic energy that we are known for and the diversity of this city. This fashion week we will move and know that you are a giant of $ 600 million, only in this week. That’s double the amount if we had a Super Bowl here. You bring [a stronger] economy to the city: 100,000 employees, $100 million in tax revenue.”

He also said that Wintour, whom he considers a friend, maintains similar nightly hours.

“We just struck up a conversation and it was an instant attraction,” Adams told the New York Times Vogue editor. “You know, you could text Anna at 1am in the morning and you’d get an instant reply.”

In another interview with WWD, he criticized the idea that fashion was frivolous, saying that he has long used clothes to push his platforms and initiatives. At the Met Gala, she wore a tuxedo adorned with custom art by Nigerian artist Laolu Senbanjo, which read, “End Gun Violence.”

And in 2010, Adams, then a state senator, erected two billboards in Brooklyn urging people to “stop the sink” with an accompanying online message: “You can raise your level of respect by pulling up your pants.”
