Make Sure Your Furnace Filter Is Right With These Tips

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – There are many tasks that most of us will complete countless times, one of which is changing air filters.

It is recommended to change your furnace filter every two to three months. But how do you know it’s the right one?

Drew Compton of Air Services said that in addition to making sure the filter is the correct size, you also want to make sure it will complement your system.

“Each filter has a MERV rating. It is basically the thickness of the filter. We recommend an 8, but if you go too high it can cause restriction issues,” Compton explained.

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, and each furnace performs best within a specific range.

Special filters for allergies or asthma may be helpful for some people, but may not be compatible with your heating system.

“If you choose the wrong filter for your furnace, it can cause overheating issues in your furnace when the heat is running. In fact, it can cause your system to freeze in the summer when it is cooling down. So definitely choosing the filter that fits your system is very important,” Compton urged.

An overworked furnace costs more on your energy bill, and in the worst case scenario, could completely ruin your system. Fixing a furnace gets expensive fast.

Compton explained that the best way to find out what works for your system is to read the manual. He can be sure that what he buys won’t end up costing him more in the long run.
