LV Graduate Debuts Designs During New York Fashion Week | Local news

It was like a dream come true.

Sarah Kim, a 2020 graduate of Ligonier Valley High School, debuted her own designs during New York Fashion Week this fall while a student at Albright College.

His designs, which Kim describes as “Edwardian,” debuted during New York Fashion Week. A biannual series of events mostly in Manhattan, the week features fashion collections from around the world on show to shoppers, the press and the general public.

The opportunity for Kim arose when a faculty member at her university asked her if she would be interested.

Albright College was the only undergraduate college whose students and alumni were allowed to present designs on the Fashion Week runways in 2021. In 2022, the college once again showcased eight more fashion collections on the 5th Ave runway, including from Kim.

She was excited at the prospect of being able to show her designs in New York. However, there was a problem.

“I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough time… but I did it anyway,” Kim said.

She started in March and had to have her designs ready by May, at which time the fashion show judges decided which designs would go to New York. Once selected, she would have to complete three more pieces over the summer before the show in September.

“It was a really cool experience,” Kim said.

Kim describes her designs as more “costumed up,” which pairs well with her interest in theater.

“I thought it was really cool and unlike anything else I’ve ever done. It took a long time,” Kim added.

According to Kim, she didn’t catch the design bug until grade 11, when she got sewing patterns from her great-grandmother and started making her own clothes.

At Albright, Kim is studying fashion and costume design with a primary focus on making costumes for theatrical and period costumes. After receiving her degree, she would like to return home and design theater costumes for a variety of types of performances.

While showing off her designs in New York, the theater capital, was exciting, there is another special event on her calendar next year. He is set to marry his high school sweetheart in July.
