Julianne Moore skincare and beauty routine

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire’s weekly look into the daily lives of some of the most innovative women in their industries. Have you ever wondered how they do everything in one day? Here is your answer.

Ask Julianne Moore about her beauty routine, and she’ll explain the importance of a pampering bath after a busy day, give you a laundry list of ways to keep your hair style going for a week, and emphasize the non-negotiability of sunscreen. Her relationship with makeup, though? Well, let’s just say her perspective has gone through a bit of an evolution. “When I was a kid, you were supposed to wear makeup. This was how you were supposed to present yourself to the world and look professional,” she tells Marie Claire. “The world has changed and people don’t wear makeup the same way. Now, we use makeup to enhance [our features] or because it feels festive. It doesn’t feel like we have to use it anymore, which is great.”

All that said, the Still Alice actress can’t live without a red lipstick, and she’s found a new favorite in Hourglass Cosmetics’ Unlocked range of satin cream lipsticks. “It’s wicked, it’s long-lasting, and it’s very pretty,” she says. “I also like that five percent of the lipstick proceeds go to animal rights.” While this purpose-driven product might top her list on the makeup front, Moore has dozens of other beauty products she swears by. From crystal-infused heating mats to drops of chlorophyll and Epsom salts, these are the items (and habits and rituals) the Oscar-winning star swears by.

Increasing the brightness

When I’m not working, I usually get up around 7:30 or 8: I don’t want to sleep later. Next, I’ll take two large glasses of room temperature filtered water and put chlorophyll in both. I’ve been doing that for 15 years or so. Someone once told me that someone told them it was good for the skin, so I used to drink this thing called Wachter’s Chlorphyll. Now they are out of business so I use ChlorOxygen which comes with a small dropper and is easier to transport. So, I’ll drink *at least* three cups of coffee. Huge, not small. I know it sounds terrible, but I drink them and I drink them with half and half. I drink my coffee in a ceramic mug made by this artist named JB Blunk, his daughter reused many of the ceramics he made. I read the New York Times. I do your spelling bee. I am a spelling bee addict and I love it. Sometimes that gets me out of bed in the morning. I want to know what I missed. I’m lovin ‘it.

morning maintenance

Well, here’s the thing: If I don’t have a yoga class, I’ll probably walk my dogs. And if I walk my dogs, I’ll most likely wash my face and do my skincare routine before I head out. Because I have to do this whole skincare routine. If I’m going out, I make sure to do my entire routine *plus* sunscreen. I wash my face with a mild cleanser. Hourglass has a very good one called Equilibrium – it lathers and I really like it. Or I’ll just use a CeraVe or a Cetaphil. Then i have a vitamin c serum that i only use in the morning. My facialist, Fabrizio Ormande, recommended some products to me. He has a combination vitamin A cream that I put on. Then I use sunscreen. Lately I am using Biore, which is a Japanese brand that I buy on Amazon.

Fitness Fix

I try to do yoga classes at 10 am. I go to Shala Yoga. They lost their Manhattan studio, but they still have their Brooklyn studio and are online. It’s theshala.com and my teachers are Kristen, Barbara and Ashley.

power start

After my gym class, I’ll eat something. I’ll have scrambled eggs with toast and fruit or I’ll have a pressed smoothie. It’s Green Light, but I add mango, chia, and flax seeds to it.

characteristic appearance

I love a red lip, but reds are a challenge. Sometimes they can be too blue or sometimes they are too orange. But the new Hourglass Unlocked Satin Créme Lipstick in Red Zero is very, very good for me. Sometimes I also use it on my cheeks. Also, and this is something I find very interesting, most red lipsticks are made from the crushing of thousands of female insects. When I first heard that, I was like, huh. But this lipstick is also vegan and cruelty-free, which is fantastic. It’s also a really cool product.

I will also use an eyebrow pencil because my eyebrows have been destroyed. I need to fill them. My eyebrow pencil is always blonde. The browns are too dark and the reds are too red. Many redheads do not have red eyebrows. Anastasia has a good one and Hourglasses has a good blonde. I’ll use a little bit of foundation, just enough to even out the red spots and stuff. If I’m not working, I don’t really like full coverage. The Hourglass Ambient Soft Glow Foundation is great, it’s a campaign I also did with my daughter. Then I’ll put on some mascara and that’s my day look.

Self-care ritual

I have this thing called BioMat. If I’m really, really stressed or feel really uncomfortable, I turn it on. It is a large heating pad with crystals. If I lie down and read something, I can really relax, and it’s good for my back. I also love taking baths. I’ll take a bath with Epsom salts and some eucalyptus oil. I tend to like it when the scents are a bit medicinal, it’s like a spa.

characteristic aroma

Wow, Kiehl’s musk spray.

cheap but elegant

Lip balm, and I’ll change it. I will look for something new and interesting; I love lip balm. I’ll buy small bags of chips. I also fall in love with those fluffy socks and stuff.

beauty icon

Charlotte rambling. She is so beautiful and always looks so natural. There’s something about her that’s wildly exotic, but also very human, you know? I love how she looks and I love looking at her.

hair aid

Well, my hair is very wavy and I can’t blow it out by myself. I like to turn it off and then try to make it last as long as possible. Sometimes I do it by tying it back or using an iron or something. When it’s summer and I’m not around anyone who can put it out, I just tie it up and let it air dry. And I’ll wear a hat to keep it down.

PM routine

If I have makeup on, I’ll obviously take it off. I like to use an oil cleanser or one of those cream cleansers that you get all over and then wipe off with a warm washcloth; That’s something I learned on the sets. It’s really effective and makes for a great cleansing routine. It removes all makeup very easily, it is not harsh on the face and the heat is good for the pores. Then, I’ll do my same morning routine minus the vitamin C; you only do the vitamin c once a day. I then finish off the routine with an Hourglass eye balm which I love, it’s really fantastic and emollient. Kiehl’s used to make one, but they discontinued it. I bought all the dead stock until I couldn’t find it anymore.

Turn off the lights

My husband and I like to watch and see what movies are on before we go to bed. We just watched Happening, and it’s something everyone should see. In fact, I saw it for the first time in September before going to Venice. There is a filmmaker named Audrey Duwan and she actually won Best International Film at the Gotham Awards. Annie Ernaux, who just won the Nobel Prize for literature, wrote the book Happening, and it’s her story. It is the story of a young French woman in 1963 who tries to have an abortion. The movie is so beautifully written, so beautifully acted, so beautifully directed, and it’s absolutely riveting. It’s on Netflix now. It is extraordinary. I cannot recommend it more highly.
