Jimmies go down in heartbreaking fashion 31-25 at Briar Cliff – Jamestown Sun

SIOUX CITY, IA — Despite its best efforts, Jamestown University couldn’t keep playing with fire and not get burned. The Jimmies fell 31-25 at Briar Cliff thanks to a last-second touchdown on Saturday, September 10, at the Chargers’ Memorial Field.

“When you don’t play well, you don’t deserve to win football games,” Jimmies head coach Brian Mistro said. “We’ve got to train better, we’ve got to play better, we’ve got to execute better. So, I told the guys it all starts with us as a coaching staff. We’ve got to make sure they’re ready to go into a game and we’ve got to finish it off. the last two weeks and this week we’re not done.

The Jimmies took a 17-10 lead in the fourth quarter, but early in the final frame Chargers quarterback Luke Davies passed it to Steven Whiting from eight yards out to tie the game at 17. In the Following the Jimmies’ possession, running back Zach Hammett fumbled the ball, but his defense picked it up when Hershell Jefferson intercepted a pass from Davies at the Jimmies 13-yard line. Despite the change in momentum from the turnover, the Jimmies were forced to punt with 9:44 left in the game. The Chargers drove down the field and took the ball on a second and 23 from the Jimmies 39-yard line, where Davies passed it to Spencer George to push the Chargers ahead 24-17.

The Jimmies (2-1) got the ball back at their own 10-yard line with 7:55 left. The Jimmies put the ball in Torgerson’s hands and allowed him to engineer what they hoped would be a winning drive. It looked like it would be when Torgerson held it and rushed it from seven yards with 1:29 left to cut Jimmies’ deficit to 24-23. The Jimmies decided to keep the offense on the field and Torgerson sent a ball to Ryan Collins to give the Jimmies a 25-24 lead with 1:29 left.

Jimmies wide receiver Steve Justice said the decision to go for two was an easy one as Mistro expressed confidence in his offense’s ability to get the job done. Mistro echoed the sentiments of his wide departure.

“My instinct. I trusted our guys, I love our guys and I took care of them,” Mistro said. “They executed it perfectly, I trust our guys that’s why I went for two.”

That turned out to be too much time for the Chargers (1-2), as with 22 seconds left in the game, Davies sent a short pass to Damarreon Nelson, who made several Jimmies defenders miss en route to a 30-point touchdown run. yards to put his team up 31-25.

The Jimmies return to the field at 1 pm on Saturday, September 17, when they host No. 3-Northwestern College.

Despite the loss, Justice said he is ready to focus on the Red Raiders.

“Losses are always tough and losing someone close like that hurts,” Justice said. “This team has dealt with adversity for the last three years, so we know how to focus on the next (game).”
