Jennifer Garner on her favorite hair products and meeting Dr. Jill Biden

Ask anyone about the most memorable scenes from 13 Going On 30, and their answer will likely include Jenna Rink’s prep montage that features icy blue eyeshadow, bright pink lipstick, and an updo accented with rhinestone clips, all with a soundtrack for “I want to dance with someone” by Whitney Houston. But Jennifer Garner, who plays Jenna Rink in the 2004 film, couldn’t have a more different perspective on beauty.

“My hair philosophy is the same as my makeup approach, which is that if you take care of your skin and hair, you should feel good without adding anything major,” Garner shares with BAZAAR.com. “As I get older, I probably need more mascara or help my roots a bit, but I don’t have to do that, because I know my skin and hair are as strong as ever.”

Below, we caught up with the actress to chat about her latest adventures, including launching a TikTok and her mock cooking show, as well as why she rarely uses a mirror.

Can you explain us your hair care routine?

My day usually starts with a very hard workout. Then it gets gross so I have to wash it off, most likely with Virtue Recovery or the Full line. I always do a mask on the weekends to treat my hair. Once I get out of the shower and towel dry, I always use a small 6-in-1.

And then right now I really like the new Frizz Block Smoothing Spray. I didn’t realize my hair was frizzy until I used it in this heat we’ve been in, and I realized, yes, I’m frizzy. I was recently in Chicago speaking for Once Upon a Farm and Save the Children, and it was really humid. The Frizz Block totally saved me. And it also preserved my blow dryer and kept my hair frizz-free for up to 72 hours.

Can you describe your perfect hair day?

A perfect hair day involves [my hairstylist] Adder [Abergel] doing my hair for an event. The rest of the day I just walk around with great Adir hair.

I wish we could all have Adir-level hair every day.

Yes, exactly. But more realistically, my hair is half wet, half dry, and then I put it on this barrette that I’m obsessed with, I’ve given everyone one. Then, at some point, I put him down again, and he has body from having been a little higher. And that’s how I roll.

Do you think your products make a difference in the amount of confidence you have in your hair?

Yes, and without a doubt, this is the healthiest hair she has ever had, even compared to when I was a child and had never used a product in my life. Virtue really transformed my hair. There is this protein in each of their products called Alpha Keratin 60ku which is the same protein that we have in our nails and hair – it is extracted from human hair. The protein then enters the hair while washing or conditioning or with a mask, resurfacing and plumping damaged hair shafts from the roots down. It even helps with humidity and makes it more resistant to environmental factors that cause hair to become brittle.

Is there a beauty tip you’ve received that has stuck with you and maybe you’ll pass it on to your daughters?

My beauty advice is always the same: look in the mirror less, obsess less and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be spending your time on. We all look each other in the face more than people used to, and that doesn’t do you any good. You obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face.

My advice is to look at yourself less in the mirror and be careful when injecting anything into your face. Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as long as possible to add anything. Do not think that you are 37 years old and need to inject your face. You don’t need to wear as much makeup or have such a constant blowout.

You’ve had some viral TikToks, from being in the White House to inviting fans into the shower while you wash your hair. Is there a story about how those TikToks came to fruition?

Wherever I go, [my assistant] Mo is with me. She plays a billion different roles in my life, and one is doing all my social media among a million other things. We were at the White House with Adir and they were playing music. So of course Adir and I said, “We have to dance.” We dance every time we are together, and this time we were at the White House waiting for the First Lady. Mo started filming us being silly. We find the Christmas tree. We were walking away and the First Lady walked in. We almost punched her in the face, and the Secret Service made a catalyst. We were totally caught up waltzing into the White House for Dr. Jill Biden.

Oh my God. But what a first impression!

Yes, exactly. The other TikTok, when I was in the shower in the wetsuit, was a product of me trying to show off my hair care routine in the shower. But how do you show yourself in the shower without revealing anything? With wetsuit or swimsuit. We really made it up as we went along. There was no real plan with this video.

Interestingly, Christa Allen, who played the youngest in 13 Going On 30, is also famous on TikTok. Have they ever interacted in the app or outside of it?

In fact, she played me young twice. I don’t know if we have interacted in recent years, or in a while. We have met before. But I need to hunt her down and see her, because she is a peach. She is a beauty. I am so lucky to be connected to her with such happy memories.

You have your mock cooking show. How was that created? I also love your relationship with Ina Garten. Has she given you any cooking secrets?

I grew up with a mother who prepared all the meals. She didn’t do much baking growing up, but my mom made bread on Sundays and homemade pizza dough on Friday nights. I definitely grew up a lot around a very competent cook. I started cooking for myself, just when I was a baby working in theaters. I’ve always loved watching someone cook. It’s very relaxing.

I don’t know if that reminds me of my mom or what, but my favorite person to watch cook is Ina Garten. I also love Martha Stewart, she was my favorite from OG. But Ina knew what a fan I was and over the years we became friends, which makes me really emotional. She couldn’t be more supportive and she has shown up for me in times of need and she has really been there for me in a huge way. I love and respect her.

The Pretend Cooking Show really happened because I had just joined Instagram and thought, what the hell am I going to do that is authentic to me? Well, what I love is cooking shows, but I can’t do a cooking show, so I’ll do a fictional cooking show. It became a thing, and I have fun with it.
