Jamaica Begins World Cup Qualifying Exhibition In Dominant Fashion | Sports

Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls posted a 74-36 win over Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in their opening match of the Americas World Cup Qualifier at the National Indoor Sports Center tonight.

Jamaica led their opponents 18-8 after the first quarter and 42-15 at halftime, then ran away with the third quarter 19-10 to take a 37-point lead (61-24).

The Sunshine Girls would take their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, but still had the largest margin of victory on the opening day of the tournament.

Jamaica coach Connie Francis said it was a great display from the young group of players, led by experienced captain Jhaniele Fowler.

“I thought this young group with six debutants got the exposure we need to grow our young players in order to make our final preparations for Cape Town (Netball World Cup).

“It’s a young team and we commend them for the effort. It’s just to acknowledge when teams come up with tactical changes and stick to our game plan and push forward to get more points on the board,” he said.

St. Vincent’s manager Godfrey Harry said that despite the loss he was satisfied.

“Jamaica has already qualified. It was a difficult game but we are satisfied with the result,” he said.

In the other late game, the United States outshone Antigua and Barbuda 34-22.

Jamaica will face the United States tomorrow in their second match.
