This essay as stated is based on a conversation with Katelyn Boss, a 22-year-old waitress in Salt Lake City, Utah. It has been edited for length and clarity.

When I started working as a waitress at a sports bar and grill, I had a hard time earning tips. I almost felt like I was wasting my time. He was making very little money because the Utah minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13 an hour.

I saw the ‘ponytail theory’ for making more tips on TikTok

So I went on TikTok to see what other waitresses were doing to get bigger tips. I was looking for ideas and tricks that I could use, and I found the trending hashtag #pigtailtheory. In it, women realized that if they wore their hair in pigtails, they earned more money in tips.

I was a bit surprised by the idea, but decided to give it a try. I put my hair up in pigtails and went into the bar for my shift as a waitress. That was the night I made my first $100 tip.

I was very surprised that it worked so fast.

I kept trying, and it kept working. He was making more money than ever. I was surprised. I didn’t think it would work, and everyone at work makes fun of me about it. But I tell everyone that they should try it too. It may be a TikTok trend, but it works!

I’ve thought about why I and so many other waitresses have been so successful in wearing ponytails to work, and it sickens me. I think it plays into the fantasy men have of schoolgirls and the innocence they think comes with it. If you are flirty and bubbly and wear pigtails they will really like it.

I have tried to experiment further with the pigtails. If I curl my hair before putting it into ponytails, I get even more spikes than straight hair. It almost makes me look like a doll, and guys seem to like that.

The comments I get when I wear pigtails make me feel weird.

I mean, I know everyone has their own fetishes and I don’t want to judge them. But I still find it awkward, especially when they comment on it.

One guy told me that it reminded him of the comic book character Harley Quinn, who is famous for wearing pigtails. That wouldn’t have been so bad, but then he kept telling me how badly he wanted to pull my hair. He was in a large group of his male friends, and he kept saying it. I’m 5ft 2, and his friends made fun of him, saying he likes little blonde girls with pigtails. It was creepy.

The men who like my pigtails the most and the highest tips are in their 40s and 50s.

Sometimes it can be weird when they’re with their wives or girlfriends, but I try to mostly talk to the woman so she knows I’m not trying to flirt with her guy.

I have had situations where I look at the receipt and see that the man wrote a tip amount and the woman crossed it out and put a smaller tip amount. I understand jealousy or feeling weird, but it hurts because I’m just doing the best I can for a living. Everyone has insecurities, but I don’t think you should take it out on how I pay my rent.

I definitely find it disturbing that men like the ponytail style.

But at the same time, I have to do what I have to do. If any other young women are thinking of trying the ponytail trend, she would say go for it.

You may get weird comments from men or something negative from women, but you will get higher tips.
