How a beauty director approaches skincare in 2023

Years after it started, the pandemic affected my regular beauty appointments in a way that I don’t think I can ever fully recover. I have a loose haircut schedule and am even less regimented with color. I often find myself painting my nails at home before going to a salon. And forget about eyebrow appointments!

However, I miss facials and how they make me feel. As I’ve been interviewing people for our Latest News series for the past few months, the most common response to “what’s your favorite beauty treat?” is receiving facials.

As Deborah Hanekamp, commonly known as Mama Medicine, told me, “Getting facials is one of my favorite ways to treat myself. I feel like it’s so important to be able to receive healing, and facials are my favorite way to do it.” . she says. “As a mother and with how much I work, it’s really hard to find time to take care of myself. And even the simple fact that in a facial, you just go into one room and they take care of you instead of taking care of everyone else. That’s so healing for me, and any other magic that happens after that is a bonus.”

And honestly, letting them take care of you runs deep. While I am choosing facials as my modality, it does not have to be facials if they are not available to you. In whatever small ways you can accept being cared for, I encourage you to enjoy those moments this year.
