JD Sports Canada, a sports apparel retailer that has expanded around the world, comes to Hamilton as it tries to gain ground in Canada.

The retailer’s building hoarding on the first level of the CF Lime Ridge shopping center on Hamilton Mountain is almost impossible to miss. The UK-based chain also told Retail Insider in the fall of 2021 that it is planning a big expansion in Canada, partnering with Cadillac Fairview, whose holdings include the mall.

The company was founded just over 40 years ago in Manchester, England. (The name derives from the first initials of co-founders John Wardle and David Makin.) It is now in 20 countries with almost 900 stores worldwide and has been opening steadily in major Canadian markets. Its first Canadian location opened in the North York area of Toronto, while it has also moved to Edmonton, Vancouver and has a Calgary location opening in two weeks.

Brands can be everything to sneaker lovers, and JD Sports sells adidas, Asics, Calvin Klein Performance, Converse, Levi’s, Nike, Puma, The North Face, Reebok, Under Armor, and VANS.

Information about the chain and a schedule for a Hamilton opening can be found on Instagram (@jdsportsca), Twitter (@jdsportscanada) and online at jdsports.ca.

Interestingly, JD Sports’ launch in Edmonton involved helping to promote the Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Hamilton is also part of the fourth year league, with the Hamilton Honey Badgers.

Lime Ridge Mall, located at 999 Upper Wentworth St., has a few other options for sportswear and sports equipment. Sport Chek is one of the mall’s flagship stores and also includes Foot Locker and two Lids locations.
